  2. Introduction • The Lord’s supper is an ordinance (a memorial) that God instructed us to practice. • The Lord’s supper focuses our lives back on the basis of our salvation – the substitutionary death of Christ.

  3. The Importance of the Lord’s Supper • “Ye do shew the Lord’s death, till he comes.” (1 Cor. 11:26). Its primary importance is to bring to remembrance the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “This do in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). • We are to remember his suffering as well (1 Cor. 11:24 says to remember his body was broken for us. • The blood, which cleanses us from all sin, and was shed for the remission of our sins (Heb. 9:22)

  4. The Elements of the Supper • Jesus spoke of eating his flesh and drinking his blood in John 6:53-63. He was careful to explain it was NOT literal. John 6:63 says the words he were speaking were “spiritual.” • The Jews were forbidden in Lev. 17:11-12 from drinking blood. • The gift of the cross is not the flesh and blood of Christ, but eternal life (Rom. 6:23)

  5. The Two Elements • Unleavened bread • Unleavened wine (Isaiah 65:8) 1 Cor. 5:8 says that leaven is a picture of sin. The bread pictures Christ’s body, and the wine (grape juice, or new wine) pictures His blood. Grape juice is used because normal fermented wine is leavened, while the new wine (grape juice) is not fermented but has the flavor of grapes (as in pure blood of the grape) – Deut. 32:14

  6. Who can Participate? • 1 Cor. 11:20-34 describes how the Lord’s supper is to be conducted. Lost people are not included at the Lord’s supper because they have never experienced the free gift of salvation that the Lord’s Supper pictures.

  7. What is the Approach to the Supper? • Fear and Trembling – 1 Cor. 11:17-34 – the Corinthians had turned it into a feast to satisfy temporal hunger, not to remember the Lord’s death. It is a sacred time and demands a sacred attitude. • With Desire – It is something to look forward to because Jesus desired to have the supper with His disciples (Luke 22:15) • A Clean Heart – 1 Cor. 11:28,31 – judge yourselves, examine your heart. The Lord’s supper is a reminder that is for our sin that Christ died.
