LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP BUILDING A RESILIENT CHAPTER & STATE ORGANIZATION PRESENTER: DON MICHELS SEPTEMBER 17, 2012 Educate Advocate Support 1
BACKGROUND • AFA REQUIRES AN ENGAGED CIVIC BASE IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES TO MEET ITS MISSION OBJECTIVES • GRASS-ROOTS CHAPTERS CREATE A LOCAL VOICE WHICH ADD VALUE TO ALL AFA PROGRAMS • LEADERSHIP IS A NECESSARY COMPONENT OF CREATING, NURTURING, AND STRENGTHENING THE GRASS-ROOTS NETWORK • LEADERSHIP DOES INCLUDE THE REQUIRED ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICERS IN CHAPTERS • BUT, LOCAL LEADERSHIP REQUIREMENT IS ACTUALLY MUCH BROADER THAN JUST THESE KEY POSITIONS • OBJECTIVE: CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE LEADERS WILL RISE FROM VALUE-ADDED ACTIVITIES Educate Advocate Support
HOW DO YOU DO THIS? • SHIFT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY • FROM FILLING OFFICER ROSTERS • TO BUILDING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE MEMBERS’ PARTICIPATION IS VALUED AND LEADERS EMERGE • KEY FACTOR: RECRUIT TO TASK, NOT OFFICER POSITIONS • LEARN TO CAST A WIDE NET FOR POTENTIAL HELPERS • INVOLVE OTHER CIVIC GROUPS WHERE APPROPRIATE (I.E. ARNOLD AIR SOCIETY/SILVER WINGS MEMBERS & ALUMNI) • BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH CIVIC-MINDED VOLUNTEERS Educate Advocate Support
HOW DO YOU DO THIS (CONT’D)? • REVIEW ANNUAL PLAN FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO RECRUIT TO TASK • USE COMMITTEES TO RUN EVENTS • OBJECTIVELY FOCUS EVENTS TO SUPPORT AFA MISSION • ROTATE LEADERSHIP FOR EVENTS WITHIN COMMITTEE Educate Advocate Support
STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINING THE LEADERSHIP BENCH • VALUE PEOPLE’S CONTRIBUTIONS AND PARTICIPATION • TIMELY, MEANINGFUL, CONTINUOUS COMMUNICATION • HAVE A PLAN FOR ROTATING PEOPLE INTO AND OUT OF KEY LEADERSHIP POSITIONS • CREATE AN EXPECTATION FOR LENGTH OF SERVICE AND A PATH THAT WILL SERVE AS A PIPELINE INTO KEY POSITIONS • DEVELOP LEADERS THAT EMERGE FROM TASK ASSIGNMENTS • APPOINT THEM AS VP’S FOR SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS • USE THESE POSITIONS FOR TASK LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES • RE-RECRUIT VOLUNTEERS & TEAMS EVERY DAY • CREATE A LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT ATTITUDE THAT CONTINUES TO AFFIRM THE VALUE OF THEIR TASKS Educate Advocate Support
APPLYING LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES • Create tasks which provide meaningful opportunities for Community Partners to participate • Flow of funds from Community Partner Program to support Chapter-provided scholarships • Have Community Partner members serve on scholarship selection committee • Show what the Chapter (& AFA) is doing in your community • Hold an AFA Chapter Fair with booths that demonstrate where the Chapter is creating civic value • Booth on Chapter scholarship programs and fund-raising results with pictures of scholarship recipients • Booth displaying tools to tutor students on STEM subjects with the intent to recruit tutors • Get involved in supporting the AFA/CAP aviation museum initiative Educate Advocate Support
APPLYING LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES (CONT’D) • BOOTH DISPLAYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN OF DEPLOYING PARENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN SOME ACTIVITIES • ALSO IDENTIFY THAT YOU NEED “X” NUMBER OF PEOPLE TO HELP • BOOTH DISPLAYING THE PICTURES OF EQUIPMENT THE CHAPTER HAS PROVIDED TO BASE-LEVEL ORGANIZATIONS (I.E. REFRIGERATORS, FREEZERS, GRILLS, COFFEE MAKERS) • FIND WAYS TO INVOLVE PEOPLE IN THOSE ORGANIZATIONS TO CONNECT WITH AFA TASKS • IDENTIFY OPPORTUNITIES TO INVOLVE OTHER CIVIC GROUPS (I.E. VFW, AMERICAN LEGION) IN CHAPTER EVENTS • IDENTIFY OPPORTUNITIES TO ATTRACT AND INVOLVE YOUNGER PEOPLE IN VALUE-ADDED ACTIVITIES • EXAMPLE: BIKE RACE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHARITY • HELP SPONSOR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL CYBER PATRIOT TEAM • ALSO HELP SET UP PARENT/TEACHER BOOSTER CLUB FOR TEAM Educate Advocate Support
