Early Life Charlemagne was born in the year 742 in a place unknown to historians. In 771, Charlemagne took up the throne when Carloman II, the current king, died. He was now king at the age of twenty-nine. Two years later, Charlemagne aided against eh Lombard Dsiderius who was invading the papal states at the time. Charlemagne took Pavia and accepted the role as protector of the Church in all her temple powers.
Facts about Charlemagne • It is suspected that Charlemagne spoke a Germanic language because of the Germanic people in the area where he lived. • He married five times and had many children. • Between 791-796, Charlemagne eliminated the Avars, who controlled a small empire in Europe. • He was crowned emperor by the pope in the year 800, in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. • Charlemagne protected the pope and the Church, also making laws for the Church. • He established schools across Europe, and many people became Christians as a result of the teachings taught in school.
Charlemagne and His Relation to the Catholic Church • Charlemagne was a very religious person because of how much he promoted religion in his empire. • Charlemagne wanted his people to praise God and make sure there was no more persecution in his empire. • Charlemagne, with his strong Catholic beliefs in mind, had a throne made for Jesus Christ when it was time for the Judgment Day in the world. He had the throne face eastward in hopes that it would be where Jesus sat when he judged all people at the end of time. It still faces eastward in the cathedral in Aachen, Germany.

When he died in 814, he was 72 years old.
