  2. Since the Fall of 2000, James Madison University has provided a facility to allow students to receive additional instruction/tutoring. This facility has been formally known as the “College of Science and Mathematics Science and Math Learning Center” but is basically known by the student population as the “Learning Center.” 02

  3. Introductory Math courses Introductory Statistics courses Introductory Physics courses Introductory Chemistry courses Introductory courses that feature these subjects Introductory Biology courses (this fall) This facility provides tutoring by both faculty and advanced undergraduates 03

  4. The faculty members are Charles Cunningham from the Math Department and Mark Mattson from the Physics Department Chuck is in the foreground Mark This fall, we are excited that Alicia James will be joining us in the new position of Chemistry Coordinator. 04

  5. Supplemental Instruction What is it? An academic assistance program that helps students enrolled in historically challenging courses master course content and develop and integrate learning and study strategies. 05

  6. Who does supplemental instruction help? • Supplemental instruction (S.I.) sessions are: • Free • Voluntary • Open to every student in each designated course The goal is to aid all students in a class, regardless of their knowledge or ability level. 06

  7. What is a S.I. leader and what role do they play in S.I. sessions? • Course-competent undergraduate students • Guide students to a greater understanding of course content by facilitating student discussion • Work to further develop student learning and study skills. • Attend the course lectures, take notes, and stay up-to-date on all homework and reading assignments • Undergo training and learn useful strategies for helping students 07

  8. What goes on during supplemental instruction? • Regularly scheduled, fifty minute-long sessions that begin at the start of the semester • Students work together under the guidance of a S.I. leader. • Students compare notes, discuss readings and concepts, work on practice quizzes and tests, and take part in other collaborative activities. • Students learn helpful strategies for studying and learning. 08
