What is Radiation? By Caoilfhionn Hurley
Radiation • Radiation is the process in which energy is emitted as particles or waves. • Radiation is a way of treating cancer without pain.
Radiation Uses in Medicine • Radiation is used for diagnosis and treatment.
Ionizing • Ionizing is the treatment of cancer using radiation.
Different way radiation is given • By a machine, outside the body, emitting radio waves. • By putting something inside the body that will emit radio waves into the body.
Radiation Uses in Cancer • ‘Curative Intent’- Intended to get rid of any cancer cells by damaging their DNA. • ‘Palliative Intent’- Intended to relieve pain suffered by patient but not to cure.
Marie curie By Caoimhe Gaffney
About Marie Curie • Marie curie was born on the 7th November 1867. • She was born in Warsaw in what was then the kingdom of Poland. • Marie’s mother operated a boarding school for girls but resigned after Marie was born. • Marie’s mother died of tuberculosis when she was 12.
Education • She studied at Warsaw’s clandestine FlotingUniversity, and began her practical scientific training. • In late 1891, aged at 24 she left Poland and travelled to France, she stayed with her sister and brother-in-law, before renting a garret close to the university. • She proceeded with her study of chemistry, physics and matamatics
Marie was awarded her degree In physics and began working in a laboratory. • Marie met her husband Pierre who was the professor of the school of physics. • The curies investigated radioactivity, building on the work of Roentgen and Becquerel. • In 1898 the curies announced the discovery of polonium (chemical element). • At the end of that year they announced the discovery of radium, and were awarded the nobel prize for physics.
