  3. ty·pog·ra·phy      [tahy-pog-ruh-fee] –noun 1. the art or process of printing with type. 2. the work of setting and arranging types and of printing from them. 3. the general character or appearance of printed matter.

  4. Typography is an art started with Gutenberg. • Gutenberg created the first printing press with moveable type. • Each letter individually set, and made out of a raised metal shape. • Because of this, space between letters, words and lines became so important when laying out type.

  5. Typefaces

  6. There are three categories of typefaces of font families.

  7. Times New Roman Baskerville Serif Fonts • Typefaces that have feet or caps on the endof the letters. American Typewriter Cochin

  8. Gill Sans Sans Serif Fonts • Font families that are plan, with no serifs (caps and feet on letters) Verdana Arial Black Helvetica

  9. Zapfino Display Fonts (script,novelty) • Fonts that are not meant to be used for documents, but forposters, signs etc. Chalkboard Herculanum Brush Script MT

  10. Type Styles The way a font family or typeface is used.
