Exploring Earth’s Biomes • Land Biomes • Tundra • Taiga • Coniferous Forest • Temperate Deciduous Forest • Temperate Grassland • Desert • Savanna • Tropical Rain Forest • http://lsb.syr.edu//projects/cyberzoo/biome.html
What’s a biome? • A large group of ecosystems that share the same type of climax community. • What defines a biome? • Latitude • Altitude • Precipitation
Biome Project • We are going to do a biome project. Create a biome replica in a shoebox.
1. Tundra • -26 C to 12 C • Less than 25 cm of precipitation • Soil: moist, thin topsoil over permafrost, nutrient poor, slightly acidic • Permafrost below topsoil • Treeless land • Long summer days • Slow decay
2. Taiga • -10 C to 14 C • 35-75 cm of precipitation • Coniferous Forest • South of Tundra • Long, severe winters • Short, mild summers • Topsoil highly acidic, low in nutrients
3. Temperate Deciduous Forest • 6 C to 28 C • 75 – 125 cm of precipitation • Temperate Forest • Soil is humus, moist, moderate nutrient levels • Soil underneath is clay • Broad-leaved hardwood trees and shrubs • Ex: East coast of the U.S.
4. Temperate Grassland • 0 C to 25 C • Between 25 and 75 cm of precipitation • Soil: deep layer of topsoil, very rich in nutrients • Covered with grasses and small plants • “The Breadbasket of the world” • Large herds of grazing animals
5. Desert • 7 C to 38 C • Less than 25 cm of precipitation • Soil: dry, often sandy, nutrient poor • Arid Region • Little to no plant life • Most animals are small
6. Savanna • 16 C to 34 C • 75 – 150 cm of precipitation a year • Soil: dry, thin topsoil, porous, low in nutrients • Tall grasses, scattered trees
7. Tropical Rain Forest • 20 C to 34 C • 200 – 400 cm precipitation a year • Soil: moist, thin topsoil, low in nutrients • Most diverse • Warm, wet • Near equator • Forms dense jungles • Quick rate of decomposition
5. Water • Freshwater • Estuaries • Saltwater (Ocean)
5a. Freshwater • Lakes • Ponds • Streams • Rivers
5b. Estuaries • Definition: • Coastal body of water • partially surrounded by • land, mix of freshwater • and saltwater.
5c. Water • Ocean • Salinity • Tides
