(two places) • What happened to the pilgrims when at sea? • What problems did they face when they arrived? • How many survived the first year? • Pilgrim/Puritanism History and Beliefs • History of the Puritans? • How did communities work then? • Calvinism: TULIP • What was the most important aspect of the puritan life?

  3. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” – by Jonathan Edwards • The Sermon • What objects/symbols does Edwards use to describe those being held by God over Hell itself? • What type of persuasive argument does he used in his sermon (logical, emotional, ethical?) • What does it mean to be “elect?” • If one loses their faith, what would a person assume about that individual?

Anne Bradstreet’s Poetry • Types of Poetry • What are the two parts of meter? • Foot (Iambic) • Number of feet (Pentameter) • “To My Dear and Loving Husband” • What does she prize her love more than? • What is her hope in the afterlife? • “Upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666” • How does her thought process change throughout the poem itself? • What does Bradstreet compare her house to at the end of the poem?

Miscellaneous Items • Test will focus on the Puritan beliefs and literature studied during that time • May ask about hypocrisies of that belief system (in notes on The Puritans) • Historical events of Puritans (that we’ve discussed) • Use homework handed back to help you study • Test will be no more than 65 questions – multiple choice, True/False, matching
