  2. Some Elements are Radioactive • Marie Curie came up with the term radioactivity to describe the emission of radiation created by certain elements such as uranium, polonium and radon.

  3. 3 Types of Radiation • Rutherford discovered that there are 3 types of radiation: • Alpha particles • Beta particles • Gamma particles *Rutherford won a Nobel Prize in 1908 in Chemistry for this discovery.

  4. Nuclear Medicine • Nuclear medicine is the controlled use of radioactive elements to diagnose and treat cancer as well as other serious diseases. • In terms of diagnoses they are used for imaging such as x-rays. • In terms of treatment they are used to kill cells. • Gamma rays are the most useful of the 3 types in medicine because they penetrate the furthest.

  5. Nuclear Power • Nuclear energy is the extremely large amount of energy given off by the splitting of nuclei called nuclear fission or the combining of nuclei called nuclearfusion. • Nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons use nuclear fission and fusion. • The nearest nuclear power plant from here is in Point Lepreau, N.B. It generates 25% to 30% of N.B’s energy without pollution.
