Decisions Making Good
Free moral agent - not a machine Deuteronomy 11:26-28 • Set before you… • Blessing if you obey • Curse if you will not obey Life is a series of choices
Choice Involves… More than one option Heb 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 25. Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26. Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
Choice Involves… More than one option Raised as son of Pharaoh’s daughter Riches - honor A Hebrew by birth Greater riches - more satisfying
Choice Involves… More than one option Two Choices One bad ------- One Good Sin ------------- Righteousness Flesh ------------ Spirit
Rom. 7:17-21 17. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 21. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good.
Rom. 7:17-21 • O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? • I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”
Gal. 5:17 17. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.” v. 19-21 - Works of the Flesh v. 22-23 - Fruit of the Spirit
Results of our choices Choose one - give up the other Pharaoh’s daughter - God’s heritage Now and in eternity Choice was for a “lifetime”
What did Moses Choose ? • Ill treatment better than pleasures of sin • Reproach was greater than riches • Moses looked through the eyes of faith • “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end.” Ps.73:17 • Moses looked at the end !
Implications of His choices Hebrews 11:26 (ESV) “He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.” Decided this was the better choice Looked at the big picture
Implications of His choices Refused to be called “son of Pharaoh’s daughter” We must refuse sin James 4:7 “resist the devil” 1 Pet. 5:9 “whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
Implications of His choices “He forsook Egypt” = left behind “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Matt. 6:24
How was Moses Able To Make This Choice ? “By Faith” Trusted God Involved things unseen Involvements of faith “just recompense of reward” Looking ahead to the reward
How was Moses Able To Make This Choice ? “By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.” Heb. 11:27 Forsake “sure things” for “unseen things”
How was Moses Able To Make This Choice ? “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal.” 2 Cor. 4:18
Good Example Making Decisions
Decisions Making Good Life is a series of choices “Character is the sum total of all the little decisions, the small deeds, the daily reactions to the choices that confront us.”
Three Greatest Decisions • Vocation • Marriage • God
1 Kings 18:21 “And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.”
