WCC2012-Workshop Dark Shadows over Tidal-Flat Conservation in Korea SeungSoo Chun Korea Wetlands Society, Korean Society of Oceanography, Korea National Park Service
WCC2012-Workshop Backgrounds and Concern of Tidal Flat as a habitat • Tidal flat is one of the most important ecosystems which provides various habitats to wide range of life forms. It should be preserved for the future biodiversity of the world. • Tidal flats comprises in 2.4 % of Korean territory and mainly (84%) distributes in western coast of Korean Peninsula. However, about 40% of the total tidal flats, about 1,069㎢ , have been destroyed or damaged within 30 years. • The importance of conservation of tidal flats is also emphasized by Ramsar secretariat (Korea joined the Ramsar Convention in 1997). • It is necessary to develop global discussion on conservation of tidal flats for development of a global co-initiative of conservation of tidal flats
Over 1 million shorebirds visit! Over 2 million winter birds visit! Over 200 species of macrobenthic animals! May be over 2000 species of macro- and meio-benthic animals! Esturine Tidal Flat : Suncheon City, South Korea
WCC2012-Workshop Habitat Threats
Habitat Threats WCC2012-Workshop Tidal Flat Lost in the Yellow Sea Coast (including Bohai Bay) since 1980 Total 90,300 ha lost in South and North Korea (IUCN, 2012)
Tidal-Barrage Power Tidal Barrage Inchon-bay Tidal Flat Tidal Barrage Inchon Airport Tidal Barrage
Habitat Threats WCC2012-Workshop Ongoing Large-scale Plans giving complete or partial Damages to Tidal Flat (IUCN, 2012) Total 33,790 ha Tidal Flat will be damaged for Tidal-Barrage Power (조력댐발전) in South Korea
Habitat Consideration WCC2012-Workshop Restoration of Tidal Flats and Salt Marshes? -Big reclamation and tidal-barrage power (조력댐발전) projects are still going on in Korea Dark Shadows South Korea is on the first step to be an advanced country. -must consider about restoration of habitat especially on tidal flats damaged by long and big reclamation projects However, in real, No Room for considering “Restoration” Thinking “True Conservation” before thinking “restoration”!
Habitat Reality in Korea WCC2012-Workshop WCC2012 is now held in South Korea! “Green Growth?” is an Issue suggested by South Korea! -Tidal-Barrage Power damaged in tidal flat? -Dams in Big Rivers destroyed “River Ecology and System? What is the “Green Growth”? -must be defined seriously -then can be adopted to other countries We Need True Green Growth! Not False Green Growth!
