  1. Breast Health!! Breast Cancer Prevention Dr. Patricia Sheppard Angel Chiropractic15 Princess StreetSausalito, CA415.332.0621

  2. Class Overview We will explore: • How environmental toxic overload affects the immune system • The role of insulin, the missing link in breast cancer • How to modify the expression of cancer genes with detoxification and nutritional support • Chiropractic Neurology and Hormonal Balancing: a natural and effective approach to promoting breast health and preventing breast cancer

  3. Cancer • Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, excluding skin cancer • Prostate cancer is the most common among men, excluding skin cancer • About 180,000 new cases of each occur in the US every year • Incidence of breast cancer in the West is 6-10 times higher than in Japan, and most parts of Asia and Africa

  4. Breast Cancer Risk Factors • Family history of breast cancer • Early onset of menstruation • Low fruit and vegetable intake • Lack of exercise • Weight gain, esp. as adult prior to menopause • Estrogen-containing oral contraceptive use • Smoking • Radiation exposure • Previous benign breast biopsy • Environmental toxins (theorized but not proven)

  5. Sources of Environmental Toxins CHEMICALS▪ air pollution including automobile exhaust ▪ food additives and preservatives ▪ pesticides and persistent organic pollutants (e.g. DDT) ▪ petrochemicals (plastics) and formaldehyde HEAVY METALS▪ mercury (in fish such as tuna and sea bass)▪ lead ▪ aluminum ▪ cadmium ▪ many others… MICROORGANISMS▪ 85-90% of all patients test positive for some type of microorganism (e.g. parasite, bacteria)▪ local sources of microorganisms: restaurants, water, improperly cooked meats, improperly washed vegetables, sushi

  6. Impact of Environmental Toxic Overload on the Body Toxic Insults to the Body (chemicals, heavy metals, microorganisms) Overloaded Liver and Lymphatic System Weak Immune System Imbalanced NeuroendocrineSystem • pituitary • thyroid • adrenals • ovaries Increased Incidence of Oncogene Expression

  7. How Blood Sugar Levels Affect Hormonal Balance • The pancreas produces insulin, a hormone which transports glucose from the bloodstream into the cells for energy • High blood sugar levels can cause Insulin Resistance

  8. How Blood Sugar Levels Affect Hormonal Balance, cont. Insulin Resistance (AKA “Syndrome X”): When the cells become insensitive to the insulin message.  Blood sugar is not properly managed and the pancreas is required to secrete more and more insulin.  When insulin levels become very high they influence gene expression, altering cellular function and promoting accelerated aging.  Insulin resistance can also cause weight gain even when eating a low calorie diet, as excess blood sugar is stored as fat.

  9. The Link Between Insulin Resistance and Cancer • Insulin not only controls the blood sugar but interacts with many other hormones including:- insulin-like growth factor- human growth hormone- cortisol- serotonin- noradrenalin • All of these hormones help the body modify gene expression • When hormones are out of balance, the likelihood of oncogene (cancer gene) expression increases

  10. Modifying Oncogene Expression • Every cell in the body contains the same genetic information • Certain cells express only a part of the genetic message; the rest lie dormant or unexpressed • Oncogene expression can be modified (reduced) by: - balancing blood sugar- eliminating toxins from the liver and lymphatics - managing stress - eating well & exercising - Chiropractic Neurology and Hormonal Balancing

  11. Chiropractic Overview: The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Maintaining Physiological Balance • Sensory nerve fibers conduct messages to and from the spinal cord and brain • Insults to the body (chemicals, heavy metals, microorganisms) can cause sensory nerve fibers to become dull. • Dulled sensory nerve fibers do not function up to capacity. • They can become hypo- or hyper-sensitive, leading to physiological imbalances.

  13. NAET NAET (Nambudripad’s Allergy EliminationTechniques):- NAET was discovered by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad in 1983.- NAET is a non-invasive, drug free solution used to eliminate allergies of all types and intensities.- NAET is a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupressure, chiropractic, nutritional, and kinesiological disciplines of medicine.- One allergen is treated at a time. Basic essential nutrientsare treated during the first few visits. Chemicals and environmental allergens are treated after completing about ten basic essential nutrients. Each patient’s length of treatment differs based on the health of their immune andnervous systems. NAET ChiropracticNeurologyand Hormonal Balancing

  14. Applied Kinesiology Applied Kinesiology (A.K.) - Applied Kinesiology (A.K.) is a system using muscle testing to getfeedback on neurological function. - The methodology is concerned primarily with neuromuscular function as it relates to the structural, chemical and mental physiologic regulatory mechanisms. - A.K., which originated within the chiropractic profession, is an approach to clinical practice, with multidisciplinary applications. 15. Applied Neurology Applied Neurology:- Applied Neurology is used to reactivatesensory nerve fibers in the central nervous axis.- These dulled nerve fibers can be reactivated to a higher level of integration and normal neurological functioning. 16. Nutritional Support and Detoxification Nutritional Support and Detoxification Includes:- Enzymes to improve digestion and balance pH- Herbs and nutrients to restore liver function (Phase I and Phase II detoxification pathways)- Omega 3 Fatty Acids to protect cellular membranes while going through detoxification- Low Level Laser therapy to drain toxins from the liver and lymphatics ChiropracticNeurologyand Hormonal Balancing Nutritional Supportand Detoxification

  17. Low Level Laser Therapy The low level laser clears neurological disorganization and helps balance hormones by: • regenerating nerves • draining the lymphatic system • draining toxins from organs • increasing nutrition to the area • increasing oxygenation to the area
