  2. Divorce is the legal action that ends a marriage. • Divorce will account for most of those untimely endings. Dissolving a marriage brings major changes in the lives of families. Even the most civil breakups can cause pain, stress and confusion.

  3. Why Marriages End… • Marriages fail for a number of reasons. Sometimes partners grow in different directions. • They no longer share the same interest that once drew them together. • Partners may not communicate well enough to maintain a relationship.

  4. Physical and Mental cruelty can also contribute to a breakup. • What other factors do you think can contribute to divorce?

  5. Stress • It is the body’s response to circumstances around you. It may be positive or negative. • Ex. Positive stress – wedding, birth of a child • Negative stress – death, job loss

  6. Causes of stress • Tests or exams • Parents, teachers, friends • Pregnancy • Loss of job • Illness • Added responsibility

  7. How do people cope with stress? • Clean • Exercise • Listen to music • Fight • Drink • Drugs • Verbal assault • Worrying • Sleep • eating

Canada • In Canada, divorce was not a common occurrence until after the end of the Second World War. • According to figures collected by Statistics Canada, the divorce rate in 1921 was 6.4 per 100,000 people. • This rate did continue to rise through the subsequent decades, despite the fact that until 1968, the only way that a couple could get a divorce was to make an application to the Senate. After an investigation, if the case had merit, a special Act of Parliament was needed to end the marriage.

  10. In 1968, the Divorce Act came into effect. Couples could be granted a divorce on the grounds of adultery, cruelty, desertion, imprisonment, or separation for three years. As a result, the divorce rate increased to 54.8 per 100,000. • Another big jump in the divorce rate occurred in 1985, when divorce laws were amended again. At that point, the Act was changed to allow couples to divorce after being separated for one year.
