  1. Grade 5 Science Topic: Environment and Us Recycling What it is? And what it is not?

  2. Recycling is: • Conversion of OLD materials/items to NEW materials/items or products • That means, you break down old and damaged materials to make them into raw materials. When you have the raw materials, then you can make them into NEW products again • Recycling is a reversible change • Recycling is a BIG PROCESS Step 1: BREAKING DOWN of MATERIALS Step 2: Processing of materials ---> To prepare raw materials

  3. Why do we recycle? We will conserve natural resources (both renewable and non-renewable). How? We won’t need to consume or bring in NEW / FRESH raw materials (minerals, coal ores, crude oil, trees!!) That means recycling leads to: • Less Quarrying for new minerals • Less cutting down of trees (less deforestation) • Less waste production • Less negative activities that harm our environment

  5. When paper and paper products (cardboard, paper boxes, shoe boxes, tissue papers, newspapers etc.), are recycled, they go through the same process as paper manufacturing The paper products are broken down, shredded and made into pulp heat + chemicals = The pulp becomes paper.

  8. Can you recycle at home? Partially YES NO Because RECYCLING is done at the recycling facilities/plants where huge instruments are there to - break down materials - Process the materials - And make new items or products again By contributing to the process of recycling! • By collecting and putting old and damaged plastic items/products in PLASTIC recycle BINS • Similarly, metal items into METAL recycle BINS • Paper/paper products into PAPER recycle BINS

  9. Observe these BINS carefully! Did you know there are three UNIVERSAL COLOUR CODES FOR RECYCLE BINS? BLUE, YELLOW AND RED! Can you find the recycle logo? DO WE HAVE SUCH ‘LABELLED’ BINS IN LAHORE OR PAKISTAN? WHY OR WHY NOT? DISCUSS WITH YOUR PAIRS!

  10. All types of glasses are recyclable. Break down old damaged glass products and make them into NEW glass items/products For example: Window glass can be recycled at the plants (factories) to make NEW glass.
