Sharing of information • Share information in schools and local authorities • Ensure that it reaches key personnel • During the day, discuss how colleagues share information (e.g. sharing presentations and resources from event; emails; professional dialogue at meetings; bulletins; literacy coordinator/champions; share on Glow/blogs/Tweets) For Scotland's learners, with Scotland's educators

Education Scotland updates…Vibrant Libraries, Thriving Schools national strategy • Every child and young person should have access to the benefits a vibrant library offers if we are to achieve the ambition of excellence and equity in Scottish education. • Headteachers and Education Scotland will ensure that the work of the school library is included in school inspections and inspection results are used to encourage improvement of the service. • Inspectors will look at the contribution of the library to wellbeing, inclusion and achievement across the curriculum. • Implementation Group – Librarians’ Hub (share case studies, good practice, CLPL) For Scotland's learners, with Scotland's educators

Scottish Education Awards 2019 • A variety of applications from early years, additional support needs, primary and secondary schools • Final round of judging will take place in April/May • Awards ceremony in June • Best applications showed: • Literacy embedded throughout curriculum • Established practice (rather than projects that have just started) • Evidence of impact of practice on learners For Scotland's learners, with Scotland's educators

Scottish Learning Festival (September 2019) • Achieving excellence and equity, through: • Creating a culture of empowerment that enables everyone involved in the system to contribute to the agenda of improvement • The importance of wellbeing in developing a healthy, successful learning community • 18 applications to run seminars in raising attainment in literacy • Strongest applications clearly addressed at least one of the above SLF themes • Were specific in their description of the potential benefitsand impact of their seminar and how delegates would be actively engaged. Scottish National Standardised Assessments:ACER National Report for 2017/18 • In session 2017/18, each year group’s • capacity was reported in three broad • regions: high, medium and low • These descriptions were based • on a summary of the skills, knowledge • and understanding assessed in questions, • which, in turn, were aligned to the • Benchmarks. SNSAs: ACER National Report for 2017/18 • Key findings on literacy: Reading • At P1, nearly half of the children showed high capacity, with most of the others showing medium capacity  – Tools for Reading and Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation • At P4, a majority of the learners demonstrated high capacity in the two organisers - Understanding, analysing and evaluating and Finding and using information • At P7, the majority of learners demonstrated high capacity - There was a slightly larger proportion of learners with high capacity for the Understanding, analysing and evaluating organiser • At S3, overall, about half of the learners demonstrated high capacity. SNSAs: ACER National Report for 2017/18 • Key findings on literacy: Writing • Tools for Writing: spelling, punctuation and grammar • With the exception of the results for the organiser Spelling in P4, across all three year groups (P4, P7 and S3) the greatest proportion of learners tended to be found in the high capacity group, with the second-highest proportion in the medium capacity group • Few learners were observed in the low capacity group. SNSAs: ACER National Report for 2017/18 • The report also provides analysis of results for discrete groups of learners: • Gender • Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation • Ethnic background • Free School Meal Registered • Additional Support Needs • Looked After Children at Home and Looked After Children Away from Home • English as an Additional Language • From session 2018/19 onwards, learners’ capacity will be reported against a twelve Bands: • P1: Band 1-6; P4: Band 4-9; P7: Band 6-11; S3: Band 7-12 • This will result in a more detailed analysis in future years. New Resources • National Improvement Hub page on reading for pleasure/creating a reading culture • Language and Literacy: communication, collaboration, co-production: • Lalco.org.uk (multidisciplinary network) • SQA English NQ resource (Links to key documents) – to be shared on Yammer • Introduction to inclusive education - free online professional learning– badged module For Scotland's learners, with Scotland's educators

  17. Literacy resources update • The free Reading and Writing circles are in the process of being updated • and should be published in late Spring 2019. • The circles can be used in primary and secondary and may also benefit • EAL learners and adults. They provide: • Descriptions of the key areas involved in the acquisition of reading and writing skills. • A tool to support an understanding of how a learner’s literacy skills are developing. • Support in identifying areas of strength and difficulties. • Approaches and strategies for each key area. • A range of free resources are available to support the acquisition • of literacy skills on the Addressing Dyslexia Toolkit.
