Observations & Inferences Observation: An act of noting and recording an event, characteristic, behavior, or anything else detected with an instrument or with the senses. Qualitative observation: An observation made using your 5 senses. [sights, sounds, smells, tastes, & textures] Quantitative observation: An observation that is expressed in numbers. [time, temperature, mass, distance, & volume] Inference: A logical conclusion drawn from available evidence and prior knowledge.
