  2. The migration African Americans moved from the South to big cities in the North The South faced many economic problems The North was not tolerant of the major influx of African Americans.

  3. African American Goals… Not to be discriminated against To have equal opportunity To be able to provide for families Find jobs

Marcus Garvey Founded a black nationalist group called the (Universal Negro Improvement Association/UNIA) Garvey mobilized thousands of African Americans and organized meetings, parades, and pride messages. Set up a successful newspaper called the Negro World Wanted African Americans to have independent nation

  5. HARLEM RENAISSANCE • Harlem is on the upper east side of New York • Population nearly doubled in Harlem • Very diverse mix of cultures in Harlem • Like other urban areas, Harlem suffered from poverty and unemployment due to the over-population in the area.

Harlem Renaissance • Problems in Harlem were eclipsed by something called the Harlem Renaissance • It was also a literature movement led by many middle class educated African Americans • Many poets helped establish the Harlem Renaissance for what it was • Claude McKay and Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston were some of the accomplished writers

  7. African American Performers • During the 1920’s African American performers had a very large following • Paul Robeson, the son of a runaway slave, became a very famous dramatic act. • African Americans were starting to get recognized for there talents and entertainment.

African Americans and Jazz • Jazz was born in the early 1920’s in New Orleans • Jazz was a blend of many different instrument with vocals. • Jazz became music that people loved to dance to • Many African American jazz artist started to become famous in Europe. • Bessie Smith became known as the vocalist of the decade. • Louis Armstrong was also a very talented musician and vocalist
