Lines • The Standard Form of a line is Ax+By=C Note: A is a whole number and both A&B are not both equal to zero. • The Slope-Intercept Form is y=mx+b Note: m is the slope and b is the y-intercept Algebra 2
Lines Slope: In Standard Form, the slope of a line is –A/B In Slope-intercept form, the slope is m A horizontal line has a slope of zero A vertical line has slope undefined Algebra 2
Lines Graphing a line using the slope and a point We first plot our point… then if the slope is positive, we go up and to the right or negative we go down and to the right. Algebra 2
Lines Positive slope Negative slope Algebra 2
Lines • Formulas: • 1.Slope-Intercept form when you are given a point (x1,y1) and a slope Point-Slope: (y-y1)=m(x-x1) • 2.Slope of a line when you are given two ordered pairs: (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) Algebra 2
Lines • Facts: • 1. We only need two points to make a line • 2. We only need one point and the slope to make a line • 3. There are an infinite amount of points in a line • 4. Parallel lines have the same slope and different y-intercepts Algebra 2
Lines Domain: Set of nonrepeating x-values { } Range: Set of nonrepeating y-values { } Algebra 2
Lines • Real-World Application of Lines • A cab company charges a $3 boarding rate in addition to its meter which is $2 for every mile. What is the equation of the line that represents this cab company's rate? Algebra 2
Lines One final point (pun): • A line is a straight curve • A line that intersects with a circle at one point, and the radius also shares that one point is called a point of tangency. (a right angle is formed) • Tangency is studied in curves in Calculus Algebra 2
