  2. Core vs. Non-Core vaccines • Core vaccines for dogs are those that should be given to every dog. • 'Noncore' vaccines are recommended only for certain dogs. • DHLPP – AKA “5-way” • Distemper • Hepatitis • Leptopirosis • Parainfluenza • Parvovirus

  3. Puppies - The following schedule should be follows to insure proper immunity for puppies: 6 -8 weeks visit one 11-12 weeks visit two 15-16 weeks visit three Then vaccinations generally go to a annual booster.

  5. Distemper • Distemper is an airborne viral disease of the lungs, intestines and brain. • Class: core • Length of immunity: 1 year • Schedule: Should be given with each puppy booster and then yearly.

  6. Hepatitis • Hepatitis is a viral disease of the liver. • Class: core • Length of immunity: 1 year • Schedule: Should be given with each puppy booster and then yearly.

  7. Leptospirosis • Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease of the uniary system. • Up to 30% of dogs may not respond the the vaccine • Class: non-core • Length of immunity:short • Schedule: Should be given with each puppy booster and then yearly.

  8. Parainfluenza • Parainfluenza is a the dog flu, AKA infectious upper respiratory. • Strongly reccomended for dogs in kennels, shelters, show or other large groups. • Class: core • Length of immunity: moderate – may need biannual boosters. • Schedule: Should be given with each puppy booster and then yearly.

  9. Parvovirus • “Parvo” is a viral diseases of the intestines. VERY contagious epically in puppies. Flu like symptoms including bloody diarrhea are common. • Class: core • Length of immunity: 1 year • Schedule: Should be given with each puppy booster and then yearly.

  10. Rabies • Rabies is a fatal, viral disease that can spread from canine to human. • Nationally required vaccine • Class: core • Length of immunity: 1 year • Schedule: Given at 4 months of age and then annually from then on out.

  11. Coronavirus • “Corona” is a viral disease of the intestines. • Risk of exposure is higher in kennels, shelters, breeding facilities, etc. • Class: Non-core • Length of immunity: short • Schedule: Yearly starting at 4 months of age (if desired)

  12. Bordetella • Bordetella AKA Kennel Cough • Required by boarding facilities • Intra-nasialvx. • Class: Non- core • Length of immunity: short • Schedule: Can be given starting at 4 months of age and then for boarding, must be current (6 months).

  13. Lyme Disease • Lyme Disease is a nervous system disease spread by ticks • Vaccine recommended for “outside” dogs. • Class: non-core • Length of immunity: 1 year • Schedule: Can be started at 4 months of age then yearly.

  14. Heartworm Disease • Blood test to check for the presence of heartworms. • Should be taken between 7 – 9 months and then yearly. • After a negative result the dog should be started on a prevention medication. • Heatgaurd co. provides a guarantee against heartworms if given an annual test
