  3. Background • 30 years experience on HP training issues • Involved in HCOP, COE, SDS, MFLR • 1987- creation of original COE-HBCU; subsequent addition of Hisp., Native American, Pacific Islanders, and other • 1990 – Creation of SDS and MFLR

  4. NCDHP • Current, former, future directors and administrators of COE and HCOP programs • Work towards the funding and proper administration of the programs • Only organization focused solely on COE and HCOP • Congratulations to Beverly, Wanda, Kathy

Reauthorization of the Centers of Excellence (COE) Program • COEs: • improve recruitment/performance • facilitate research on minority health issues • train students/faculty to provide healthcare to minority individuals. Affordable Care Act (ACA)-reauthorized $50 million FY 2010-2015 • 2005: 34 COEs Today: 20 COEs • FY 2005 - $33.6 million • FY 2006 - 64.7% cut to $11.9 million • FY 2008 - $12.773 million • FY 2010 Omnibus -$24.6 million, $4 million increase over FY 2009.

Reauthorization of Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) • HCOPS: • Funding to encourage minority, economically/academically disadvantaged students to pursue health professions. • Reauthorized ACA - $51 million FY 2011-2014 • 2005:74 HCOPs Today: 35 HCOPs • FY 2005 - $35.6 million • FY 2006 - $4 million • FY 2008 -$9.825 million • FY 2010 Omnibus - $22.1 million, an increase of $3 million over FY 2009.

  8. FY 2011 Funding • Center’s of Excellence is funded at $24.45 million • Health Careers Opportunity Program (H-COP) is funded at $21.998 million

Funding in FY 2012 • Temporary Debt Ceiling Agreement • Increase of $400 billion to meet short term financial obligations • Labor-HHS: $2 billion under FY 2011 • 12-member Bipartisan, Bicameral Congressional Committee • address long-term issues of revenue, entitlement, and spending reform • $1.5 trillion in additional deficit reduction by November 23rd, 2011.

  10. How to Get Involved • Institutions should become members of the NCDHP • HCOP and COE grantees need a voice with Congress and the White House • Participate/remain informed in advocacy discussion • Be poised to contact your legislators
