8. Treasure on the Hearth There on the hearth was a pile of gold coins, glistening in the semi-darkness. “Allah, you have answered my prayers!” whispered Ali. “How can I thank you?” Then he saw the red cloth with yellow wavy stripes. “That’s the same cloth as was on the clay pot under the bramble bush!” he exclaimed. “Allah has delivered the self-same treasure to my hearth.” Ali immediately showed the treasure to his wife. “I wonder, how did Allah deliver the treasure to my hearth during the night?” he asked. His wife could only gasp and murmur: “Strange are the ways of Allah.” Later that morning, Ali called on his wife’s cousin to show him the treasure he had found on his hearth. “I wonder, how did Allah deliver the self-same treasure to my hearth during the night?” he asked. The old man could only gasp and murmur: “Strange are the ways of Allah.” And what did Ali do with the treasure? Well, he used some of the treasure to buy himself a good flock of goats, for his land was too poor to grow crops on. From that day on, he lived contentedly on his farm, with his wife and child. What did he do with the rest of the treasure? Well, now that they could afford it, he and his wife went on Hajj. (c) Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council 2009/SEMA/elearning HT_Assessment 8
