NextGen Search Strategies:Search First / Limit Later • Old Strategy: Identify resource first; then search • Fdsys Strategy: Search first; then limit
Proximity Operators Proximity Operators allow you to specify searches where one word is near, next to, or in the vicinity of another word. The three proximity operators defined are: • Adj: The adj proximity operator specifies that one word is adjacent to another in a document • before/#: The before/# proximity operator specifies that the first word is within # words and before the second word • near/#: The near/# proximity operator specifies that the first word is within # words of the second word
Search Examples • (death adj toll) near/50 iraq • jared polis [retrieves Jared Polis; Polis, Jared; Polis, Hon. Jared] • barackobama [retrieves Barack H. Obama; Obama, Barack H.; Barack Obama; Barack Hussein Obama]
Hearings: Search by Witness • Searches the Witness field for words, not for names • FDsys doesn’t index witnesses with consistency
Regulations • One of my first docs questions in 1986 was on raisin grades. • Fdsys makes this extremely easy to answer.
A Citation Locator • Use LSA to find FR section, then use citation locator to navigate to FR. • Pull up 28 U.S.C. 2255. • 27 CFR § 9.137 on Grand Valley approved maps
Not all PURLs Resolve to FDsys Partial Revert of Bulk Modified PURLs Written on Tuesday, 10 May 2011 In January 2011, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) bulk modified PURLs to point from GPO Access to the FDsys equivalent since FDsys is GPO’s official system of record. Over the past few months, the library community has been reporting discrepancies with some new PURL target URLs pointing to FDsys. Consequently, GPO has reverted PURLs that originally pointed to GPO Access WAIS documents (http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/*) while we investigate the issue. Once the issues have been resolved, the PURLs will again be modified to point to the FDsys equivalent, and the community will be notified. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate the community’s assistance in identifying the issue. http://www.fdlp.gov/component/content/article/16-cataloging/941-partial-revert-of-bulk-modified-purls • Example: http://purl.access.gpo.gov/GPO/LPS75166
