  2. Course Supplies • Variety of Informational&Literary Texts including the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Reading Program, Wonders Series & Scholastic Magazines • Folders • Post-it Notes • Highlighters/Pens/Pencils

  3. Reading Goals • Strengthen both reading and comprehension skills through the use of informational and literary texts • Build confidence by helping students to successfully internalize reading and writing techniques, guiding them to eventual independent use • Enhance student’s vocabulary usage by word walls, context clues, encouragement of replacing “tired” words in their writing with more effective, mature vocabulary • Expand critical thinking skills, utilizing textual evidence through class dialogue, reading responses and small group activities

Topics Include But Not Limited To… Literature Informational Texts Central Idea and Supporting Details Text Structures Steps in a Process Scientific and Technical Texts Graphics Author’s Argument Comparing & Contrasting Informational Texts • Character and Plot • Point of View • Theme and Summary • Figurative Language • Literary Text Structure • Comparing and Contrasting Stories • Making Inferences

  5. Independent Reading • It is strongly encouraged that independent reading be promoted at home. • Even 20 minutes a day can help your child to become a better reader. • Students will be responsible for completing monthly reading logs.

  6. Monthly Reading calendar • Each month, your child will receive a calendar to log their daily independent reading • Please initial each night your child reads • Encourage 20 minutes of independent reading nightly • Please be sure your child is reading a variety of both fiction and non-fiction • Students are always welcome to visit Mrs. Lauberin the middle school library for guidance on new titles
