  1. Positive Activities – What is it? The Education & Inspections Act 2006 requires local authorities “so far as is reasonably practicable” to secure for young people in the Authority’s area, access to: • Sufficient educational leisure time activities which are for the improvement of their wellbeing • Sufficient facilities for such activities • Sufficient recreational leisure time activities which are for the improvement of their wellbeing • Sufficient facilities for such activities

  2. What does this mean? • Provision of activities to improve young people’s personal & social development using youth work & local community provision. • These activities include; • special interest clubs • Out of school hours coaching in artistic, sporting or other physical activities • Field trips • Outdoor & residential activities • Looking beyond existing provision, working with partners to determine what should be made available for young people and what is needed to achieve this.

  3. South Derbyshire Positive Activities for Young People Partnership: • Derbyshire County Council • South Derbyshire District Council • South Derbyshire School Sports Partnership • Connexions • Safer South Derbyshire & Police • NHS Derbyshire County • South Derbyshire CVS • People Express • Community Group / Clubs

  4. Our aim is to. . . . • Identify & meet the needs of young people who are less likely to engage in existing activities • Increase participation rates in Positive Activities • Encourage disabled young people to attend any of the activities on offer • Deliver Positive Activities for priority groups of young people

  5. The Friday Night Project • Started in January 2009 • Approx 170 members from 13-19 years • Most attendees are members of Granville School – the project is open to anyone between 13-19 years • No reports of crime on Burton Road, Woodville since the start of this project • A number of hotspot areas have shown reductions in calls to service on a Friday night

  6. The Friday Night Project What’s Not Worked or we would change? • Not sustainable- still reliant on external funding • High numbers of young people demands high numbers of staff • Concerns of school site location • Change of centre manager / co-ordination role • Impacts upon police / PCSO attendance at the project • Encourage more young people from other schools to attend What’s Worked Well? • Range of partners involved and supporting the project • Number of young people attending and participating • Number of young volunteers taking ownership of the club through young person management committee • Funding attracted in through various sources • Delivering what the young people want • Wide range of activities • Young people starting to do accreditations • Trips over holiday periods
