A dishwasher is the ultimate in kitchen convenience. Washing your dishes in a dishwasher provides sparkling clean and hygienic dishes, cutlery, and pots and pans. Simply place the dirty dishes and utensils into the dishwasher, select a cycle, and turn it on. The dishwasher does the rest, automatically! When the cycle is complete, all that is left to do is to put the sparkling dishes and utensils away, ready for their next use. And, no more chapped hands and chipped manicures, struggling to clean the dishes with hot water and a scrub brush. An automatic dishwasher saves time, money, energy and headaches for today’s busy family.
As wondrous and convenient as that is, there are several other unusual and handy uses for the dishwasher that many people have not considered. For instance, did you know you can toss that soiled sponge into the top rack of the dishwasher and let it go through the cycle with the rest of the dishes? Doing this will disinfect and deodorize your sponges, giving them a much longer life cycle and saving money. Tossing the sponge in the dishwasher is a rational enough idea, after all, it’s usually found right in the kitchen, in the sink, and is already asociated with dishes and cleaning dishes.
But how about your plastic flip-flop sandals and shoes? If you are one of the many who wear the popular gardening shoes or sandals, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn you can place the sandals on the top shelf of the dishwasher and send it through a cycle. Your sandals will come out clean and refreshed. The dishwasher can do a much better job of cleaning them than you ever will with the garden hose! Or, try tossing your caps in the top rack of the dishwasher and sending it through a cycle. It saves the brim from getting bent up, and cleans and deodorizes the caps wonderfully!
By now, your wheels are working as you start to get the concept that a good cycle of ultra hot, steamy water can clean quite a few items conveniently and easily for you. Here are some other things that you may be surprised to learn you can wash in your dishwasher: sports items like mouth guards, shin guards, and knee pads; action figures and other small, plastic toys; hand tools with metal or plastic handles; hair brushes and combs; light plates and fan vents (plastic only! Not metal.) The best part is that all of these items will come out not only clean, but germ free. Of course, all these items should be washed independently of your dishes and utensils, and you will need to use common sense when tossing things in. Usually the top rack is your best bet, and avoid any items that have the potential to rust or melt.
