September 24, 2012 Area and Perimeter EQ: How can you apply what you know about finding the perimeter and area of rectangles to solve real world and mathematical problems?
What is AREA and PERIMETER? • area – the measurement of the inside of a figure Area = Length x Width Or A = L x W Example: A rectangular soccer field is measured 10ft by 3ft. Can you find the area? • perimeter – the measurement of the outside of a figure Perimeter = (2 x L) + (2 x W) Or P = add all sides Example: A rectangular soccer field is measured 10ft by 3ft. Can you find the perimeter? A = 30 ft2 P = 26ft 10ft 10ft 3ft 3ft 3ft 10ft
Let’s try another one together! Anthony wants new carpeting for his bedroom. His bedroom is a 5 yd by 11 yd rectangle. How much carpeting does he need to buy to coverhis entire bedroom? What is the perimeter of his bedroom? 11 yd 5 yd 5 yd 11 yd P = (2 x L) + (2 x W) P = (2 x 11yd) + (2 x 5yd) P = 22 + 10 P = 32`yd A = L x W A = 11yd x 5yd A = 55yd2
Kiss your brain! In your groups solve… Montia is making a display board for the schoolelections. The display board is a 7 ft by 9 ftrectangle. She needs to add a ribbon borderaround the entire display board. What is thelength of ribbon that she needs? What is the area of her board? • draw a picture or use cubes • use your formulas 7 ft P = (2 x L) + (2 x W) P = (2 x 9ft) + (2 x 7ft) P = 18ft + 14ft P = 32ft 9 ft 9 ft A = L x W A = 9ft x 7ft A = 63ft2 7 ft
This is a little harder. Brisa is making a display board for the schooltalent show. The display board is a 10 ft by 9 ftrectangle. The ribbon costs $2 per foot. How much will it cost to add a ribbon border around the entire display board? FIRST P = (2 x L) + (2 x W) P = (2 x 10ft) + (2 x 9ft) P = 20ft + 18ft P = 38 ft THEN Multiply the cost by the perimeter to find the total cost. Total Cost = $2 x 38ft Total Cost = $76
Challenge Miguel has a rectangular rose garden that measures 8 m by 10 m. One bag of fertilizer can cover 20 m2. How many bags of fertilizer will he need to cover the entire garden? A = L x W A = 8m x 10m A = 80 m2 Number of bags = 80 m2 ÷ 20 m2 Number of bags = 4
