What is a child protective investigator? A child protective investigator is a person who investigates into alleged child abuse or neglect and takes the necessary measures to ensure the protection of children. I got interested in this field because of a family friend who is in this field. Seeing how much he helps others and solves crimes was interesting and it is something I would like to do. The areas I will be researching will be; • responsibilities of a child protective investigator • pro’s and con’s of the work • the working conditions • what degree you need • the pay for the job • other facts
Nature of the work • To investigate in dangerous situations. • To locate child abusers. • Interviewing of family and others close to the victim. • To interview individuals associated with a case • To prepare reports and records • To help local law enforcement with case information. • To review case files
Working conditions • Working as a child protective investigator is both physical and mental. It is physical in aiding the police and mental in figuring out the steps in a case and during interviews. The work involves being indoors and out. Work is about 45 hours a week and the environment includes working in an office and also working in the field.
Training, qualifications and awards • Training would include learning interviewing tecniques and you would need a bachelors degree in social work, law enforcement or criminal justice. • I plan to go to Grand Valley State University to do this. • In high school I have taken Law Enforcement I and II.
Job outlook • The employment rate is about 5% and it is rising. It is competitive and I would like to find this career somewhere in Michigan.
Salary • The annual salary is around $41,000. • I believe this will fit in with my goals for my life fine. My first purchase with these earnings would be a car.
Related occupation • Social working: • Responsibilities include case work with families and also finding and using various resources. • Work conditions include mental and physical indoors and out. • Training includes a degree in social working. • The field is not very competitive and rising in employment. • The salary would be about $34,000 a year. • I choose this because I would like to help people in some way and it is similar to my first choice.
Summary • I look forward to being able to help others out of bad situations and also to help them find the resources they need. The thing I look forward to the least is paperwork.
