President Roosevelt thought the government should take action and to end the depression. • The New Deal • Federal government programs that Roosevelt thought would help the economy. • Congress quickly passed laws to put the New Deal into action.
Eleanor Roosevelt helped to get women involved in the New Deal programs. • Should spoke out for the rights of workers, African Americans, and children.
New Deal Programs • Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) • Goal: to create jobs and conserve, or protect, the natural environment. • CCC workers planted trees, cleared hiking trails, and completed other conservation projects. • The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) • People built dams on the Tennessee River. • The dams created hydroelectricity • Hydroelectricity is electricity produced by moving water. The dams also prevented floods.
The Works Progress Administration (WPA) • People built streets, parks, libraries, and schools. • Artist painted murals on public buildings and hired authors to write books about places in the U.S.
New Deal Programs still in effect today • Social Security • Social security provides money to people over the age of 65. It also helps those who have disabilities and cannot work. • Minimum Wage • A regulation is a rule or law. • Minimum wage is the lowest amount of money most workers can be paid.
