May2011 The newsletter of the Fitzroy Harbour Community Association FHCA est. 1976 www.fitzroyharbour.com Volume xiii – Issue V Fitzroy Harbour Softball starts in May It’s May, so that means softball season has begun in Fitzroy Harbour. This year, the Minor Softball program has an increased number of participants and teams in T-ball x 2, Atoms x 3, Mites x 2, Squirt/Peewee Boys, Squirt/Peewee Girls and a Bantam Boys team. Thanks to all the parents that are volunteering as coaches. The six week season begins May 8 and the ball diamonds will be action packed from Sunday to Thursday, ending with a mite tournament on June 18th. The Men’s League is also back this year, expanded to eight teams from six last year. Their games on Wednesday nights. The Ladies’ League is playing on Thursday nights. West Carleton Electric competitive men’s fastball will also be played at the FHCC again this year – see page 2 for more information. Games played on the outdoor rink surface. $100.00 per team.  Teams of 10 players, six players on the “ice” - two women must play at all times.  Ages 18 and up.  Prizes for winning teams. 2. Stop the stop sign shenanigans There have been several recent incidents of stop signs being removed by vandals at the corner of McHugo and Carleton Street in the Harbour. The police and the City have been notified. Parents, mention to your teenagers how dangerous this action can be for drivers. It’s not a funny prank, it’s dangerous vandalism. Crime Prevention is Everyone’s Responsibility From Constable Peter Jeon, Ottawa Police Service Everyone in rural Ottawa plays an important role in helping to keep our communities safe. Community safety is everyone’s responsibility and crime prevention is everyone’s business. Being the eyes and ears in your neighbourhood, it’s essential to communicate all suspicious and criminal activity to your community and police; no matter how trivial you might think it is. Not all calls are 911 calls. For a police response to a non-emergency situation such a suspicious or unusual event in progress, call 613-230-6211. Or, if you discover that you were a victim of a theft from vehicle or mischief, report it to the Ottawa Police Call Center at 613-236-1222 ext.7300. Remember, your calls matter. The Community Police Centre is a “community problem-solving centre” and is responsible for delivering crime prevention programs to the community. If you have any safety or security questions or concerns, give us a call. You can reach your nearest CPC office by calling 613-236-1222 and dialing zero. It is important to note that the CPC is not an emergency response centre and that we do not dispatch cars to complaints or crimes in progress. When a situation arises it is important to know the numbers to call for an appropriate response. Keep the following numbers close by or call the CPC and ask for your very own Make the Right Call fridge magnet. • 911—for life-threatening emergencies or crimes in progress • 613-230-6211—other emergencies, i.e.: suspicious incident or disturbance • 613-236-1222, ext. 7300—the O.P.S. call centre, to report a theft, missing person or stolen vehicle • 311—for Bylaw Dispatch Services • 613-233-8477 or 1-800-222-8477 —for Crime Stoppers. Your call will remain anonymous and Crime Stoppers do not subscribe to call display. Also, you can find all of these numbers along with other useful information can be found in the red pages at the front of your residential directory. Finally, if you are ever in doubt as to whether or not you should call police, or you cannot remember the non-emergency numbers, call 9-1-1. West Carleton Electric Fastball back for 2011 Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric competitive men’s fastball is back for another season of Greater Ottawa Fastball League play with games at the FHCC. Upcoming home games for WC Electric are on Monday May 16that 8:30pm against Kars, Monday May 30thagainst Barrhaven and a double header on Friday June 3rd at 7pm and 9pm.
