  2. Rotary is an International Organization • There are 530 districts in over 160 countries throughout the world. • Our club, Suffern Rotary Club is in District 7210 which is comprised of 66 clubs with 2005 members. • The district covers eight counties: Rockland, Columbia, Dutchess, Green, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan, and Ulster

  3. Rotary International is governed by a president and a board of directors elected from all over the world. 2008-2009 Rotary International President D. K. Lee • Annually each district elects a district governor - but each club is autonomous.

  4. Rotary Founder Paul Harris In the beginning… • The first Rotary club was organized in Chicago in 1905, by Paul P. Harris. • The club, with four members, met in rotation at the offices of the members - thus the name Rotary. • There are approximately 1.2 million members in over 30,000 clubs worldwide.

  5. Women in Rotary • About one third of our district members are women. This year about 38% of the District 7210 club presidents are women. • Our club presently has about 10 women as members. • Women, initially, weren’t admitted to Rotary until 1986.

  6. Service Above Self • Rotary was not long to recognize that fellowship alone would not keep a group together — there needed to be a purpose. • The first service project was public restrooms in downtown Chicago, IL, USA. • Rotary became the world’s first service club.

  7. Object of Rotary • The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  8. Object of Rotary • First. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

  9. Object of Rotary • Second. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

  10. Object of Rotary • Third. The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his or her personal, business and community life;

  11. Object of Rotary • Fourth. The advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

The Rotary Foundation Programs • Polio Plus – Worldwide eradication of Polio • Group Study Exchange (GSE) – Int’l exchange program for young professionals (25-40 ) • World Peace Fellowships – One or two year master’s degrees in conflict resolution • Ambassadorial Scholarships – Study in country other than scholars home country • Grants – Various grants available to clubs

  14. Paul Harris Fellows and Benefactors • Many Suffern Rotarians and spouses are benefactors of the Permanent Fund. • Over 20members and partners are Paul Harris Fellows. • Many now donate each week when paying for their meals. • Some members are multiple PHF

  16. We implement the Object of Rotary through the Four Avenues of Service

Club Service Kathy Gorman- Committee Chair • Those things that a Rotarian does to help make successful the running of the local club. • Vocational Service Mena Kanasky - Committee Chair • The promoting of the “ideal of service” throughout the business and professional world. • Community Service John Shepitka – Committee Chair • Urges every Rotarian to participate in all activities that make the community a better place in which to live. • International Service Veena Batra – Committee Chair • Encourages and fosters the advancement of understanding and good will among people of the world.

Board of Directors The Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Suffern are the club • President: Larry Palant • President-elect: Brian Brooker • Secretary: Donalee Berard • Treasurer: Steve Starubinger • and the following directors • Kathy Campagna, Peter Bohrman, Mena Kanasky, Ed Pavon, Allen Kemp, John Wickes, and Past President Rich Syrek • A new board is elected to take office on 1 July of each year. • All positions in Rotary are one year terms that change on 1 July.

The Rotary Club of SuffernProjects • Once a year, we identify possible projects. • Committee prioritizes list to match club goals in conjunction with financial constraints and club giving guidelines. • Board of Directors decides on cut-off point. • Suffern Rotary sponsors as many of these projects as possible.

The Rotary Club of SuffernRecentProjects • Donated the Community Bulletin Board in the center of Suffern in Avon Park. • Constructed a bus shelter at the corner of Airmont Road and Route 59. • Distributed in excess of $150,000 in scholarships to Suffern High School seniors; over $250 since scholarship fund (Suffern Rotary Foundation, Inc.) inception.

The Rotary Club of SuffernOngoing Projects • Supply dictionaries to all third-graders in two Ramapo Central elementary schools. • Support a girls school in Haiti. • Support water projects in India. • Arbor Day – Supply every elementary school child in the Ramapo Central School District with an evergreen sapling, bookmark, Arbor Day poster for each classroom, and plant trees in each elementary school.

  22. The Rotary Club of SuffernProjects Major fund-raisers are: • Annual Scholarship Spaghetti Dinner • Tom France Memorial Night at Antrim Playhouse • Fall football pool • Spring March-Madness pool • Fall garage sale • Valentines day re-gifting auction

  23. Volunteers in Action • Club members, along with Suffern High School Interact members packaging seedlings for Arbor Day. • Club member John Wickes, speaks with students about Arbor Day. Insert photos

  24. The Rotary Club of Suffern Exchanges • Group Study Exchanges • Teams of one Rotarian leader and four non-Rotarian business or professional young people visit the district for four to six weeks.

The Rotary Club of Suffern Exchanges • Rotary Youth Exchange Program • 16-18 year olds are exchanged world-wide. • Part of a 7,000 students/year program. • Rotarians host these young people in their homes for three to five months. • Students become part of the family. • Suffern has hosted students from France, Italy

  26. The Rotary Club of Suffern Interact Club • Our club sponsors the Suffern High School Interact Club • Community service for students • High School age students of good moral character. • Assist in Arbor Day, fundraising and spaghetti dinner

  28. The Privileges in Rotary • The privilege of FRIENDSHIP WITH LEADERS: • in your community • in neighboring cities and towns • throughout the United States • around the world

The Privileges in Rotary • The privilege of GIVING SERVICE to your community. • The privilege of DEVELOPING INTERNATIONAL GOODWILL and understanding. • The privilege of helping BUILD HIGHER ETHICAL STANDARDS within your vocation • Knowing that you have helped humanity through the common bond of Rotary.

  30. Your Obligations in Rotary Participation • To be a Rotarian you must give of your time and talents: • in community work • in fellowship and social functions • in club and district activities.

  31. Your Obligations as a New Suffern Rotarian • Attend at least one Board meeting. • Make up at two different Rotary Clubs. • Assist at Club sign-in table. • Join a Committee. Once these have been completed, your NEW MEMBER ribbon is removed.

  32. Your Obligations in Rotary Attendance • Attendance at the weekly meetings is a benefit of Rotary. A minimum of 50% is expected. • You can easily maintain your attendance levels by making up at another Rotary club meeting, participating in club service projects, and activities.

  33. Your Financial Obligations • Initiation Fee $50 • Annual Dues $150 /year • Meals $15 /week • Social Events $50 /year • Weekly 50/50 (optional) $2 • Fundraiser Tickets ~$150/year

  34. Membership There are two types of membership in a Rotary club: • Active • Honorary
