What is it • Over activity of the Thyroid gland • Most common version of hyperthyroidism • Named after Robert Graves, an Irish physician • Discovered 150 years ago…
Autoimmune • people inherit it causing problems • Their lymphocytes make antibodies against their own tissue simulate or damage them • Defect in immune system causes production of antibodies which stimulate and attack the thyroid gland • It is a disorder of the body not recognizing it’s self, causing it to attack its own tissues and cells.
Signs and symptoms • weight loss • rapid heart rate • anxiety • feeling hot • Sleeping difficulty
Signs and symptoms • Swelling of the eye muscles • Protruding eyes • feeling nervous or not able to control emotions • Trembling hands
Treatment • Surgery • Radioactive iodine • Anti-Thyroid medication • Patient having surgery will have to take replacement Thyroid hormones for rest of their life • Administering prednisone steroid
Other Facts • Disorder is most common in women • Graves' disease is not curable, but is completely treatable. • smoke tobacco should quit because eye issue can get worse
