What is Nitrate? • Nitrate is a compound made up of nitrogen and water. • Nitrate is commonly found in fertilizers. • Nitrogen is used in fertilizers. • Inside nitrogen there are amino acids and protein that are essential for plants to grow. • Nitrate’s formula is NO3. • Nitrate is tasteless, odorless, and colorless.

  3. What is the water quality indicator? • The water quality indicator is used to tell what level of nitrate a body of water may contain. • The water quality indicator is used with a color coding system in which you would compare the color of water after adding two nitrate CTA tablets and the code color slide.

  4. How does Nitrate enter the water? • Nitrate is commonly found in fertilizer. • Nitrate attempts to get to roots and gets caught in the groundwater. • Elevated nitrate levels in groundwater are often caused by runoff from barnyards, feedlots, excessive use of fertilizers, or septic systems.

  5. What are some problems in Nitrate? • Nitrate in the water can harm aquatic life. • Can cause stomach/intestinal bacteria in infants and adults. • Too much consumption of nitrate can cause blue skin coloring around the eyes and mouth. (methemoglobinemia) most common in infants.
