  1. Waste Neutral and beyond…a brief history and some of the future of sustainability at Eden Dan Ryan, Eden Project The Living Rainforest September 2010

  2. somebignumbers… 10 hectare abandoned hole in the ground 10 years old (well 9.5…) 1 million visitors pa (12 million total) 1+ million plants (5,000+ different types) 1.5 hectare rainforest (55 m high) 83k tonnes of soil (made from scratch) 500 jobs 250 volunteers 400 computers 400 tonnes of waste pa 500k electricity bill pa (but dropping – we’ve already saved about 10% this year) 20m below water table (pumping away thousands of litres of water an hour) 3k car parking spaces (the largest car park in Cornwall?) 100 million £ into Cornish economy pa (£1 billion total) £125 million investment so far

  3. Sustainability @Eden cars ‘stuff’ energy waste buildings water purchasing concrete people food

  4. female 55 reasonably well-off lives within 3 hours comes in a car with 1 other at Eden for 4 hours spends £25 And anonymous …but of course our overall visitor profile is as varied as varied can be The average Eden Visitor, Mrs Jane Doe

  6. Recycling? Just not enough…

  7. Recycling – the past forcing the market to accept supplies of materials of poorly defined use or fitness for purpose, perpetuating a negative image of the whole waste issue Recycling - the future a consumer-led demonstration of the positive value of using waste materials, matching market demand and performance requirements against appropriate recycled materials

  8. Waste Neutral “if, after reduction and re-use, the weight of recyclates and residual waste sent for disposal is equal to or less than the weight of recycled products bought in…”

  9. Phew… but what does that mean? Reducing, re-using, recycling, re-investing, re-imagining, re-inventing, re-working… Alchemy. We wanted to make rubbish beautiful again.

  10. WN Recycling Compound publicly situated to tell the story of waste see what happens to Eden’s waste on CCTV with workshop and exhibition space

  11. But how? Measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure measure……………. Dirty days

  12. Food waste 45%

  13. Composter

  14. Underestimations and oversights… People power… we discovered it takes nearly the equivalent of one whole person to run the composter…which was never factored in… Science, science, science…. We massively underestimated the input of science into running the machine. In fact it only really works because of technical science input. Not for the faint-hearted. I think it would fail spectacularly as a hobby project. Which rather limits its viability in a community context on this scale.

  15. Savings? To date over 1,200 tonnes has been diverted from landfill through the composter At a landfill tax saving of approximately £50,000 And further savings on compost Eden has had to buy

  16. So is Eden Waste Neutral? Napkins, loo roll and office paper are made from recycled paper Local recycled wood is used to mulch the plants Eden bin range is made with recycled HDPE plastic Signage used at Eden is from 100% recycled PVC Café chairs made using recycled cups Wine bottles from the restaurant are remanufactured locally into drinking glasses for sale in the shop. 90% energy saving

  17. Measuring Waste Neutral cont…. Steel and aluminium products have high recycled content Waste food is fed into on-site composter and used on site Local green waste is used as compost on site Bought in = 665.3t For Recycling = 164.86t For Disposal = 207.71 In 2006 Eden was Waste Neutral by 292.73 tonnes…

  18. Currently… Waste to recycling and composter combined is approximately 65% of total We think (hope) 80% is achievable long term

  19. Talk about it… Persuading people to change their own approach to waste on a person by person, business by business, basis is probably the biggest challenge we face Overriding aim is to inspire and encourage individuals, communities and organisations to take responsibility and implement action to reduce waste in their own lives Requires imaginative and dynamic communication, commercial influence and environmental credentials

  20. One person’s waste is another’s treasure
