  5. It is… • Starting depth pyritic layer • Kalimantan, Indonesia

  6. Experiment • Two bottles

  7. There are many Metadata standards • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metadata_standards • Dublin Core (15 elements): • describe resources for the purposes of discovery (: • 1.Title • 2.Creator • 3.Subject • 4.Description • 5.Publisher……..

  8. Functions of Metadata (for GI)

  9. Why describe spatial datasets? • Manage (storage and change) • Search (content global ) • Exchange (format ) • Use (content details, Quality)

  10. Target groups • Personal: (storage) • Own organisation: (storage and content) • Other organisations: (content, format, quality, contact person)

  11. Extent description • Target groups Functions • manage search exchange use • Personal + + - - • Own organisation ++ ++ ++ ++ • Other organisation - +++ +++ +++

  12. Metadatastandards? • Personal standard • Organisational standard • (inter)national standards

  13. Compile your own Metadata standards • By a “metaplan approach”

  14. International standards • America (FGDC) • Europe (CEN) • ISO (ISO 19115)

  19. Main elements (INSPIRE)

  20. The ISO 19115 • It describes what not how • About 300 elements • Version from 2003 • ISO 19115 – 2: Geographic information - Metadata - ISO 19139 Implementationspecifications

  21. Profiles for ISO 19115

  22. Metadata within SDIs • Metadata play a central role in SDI: • Publishing data • Discovering data • Using data • To keep metadata “up to date” is problematic • There are attempts to automate it.

  23. Use of Metadata AfterWiner, 2011

  24. Metadata evolution Olfatet al., 2010

  28. Conclusions • Describing spatial datasets with metadata is essential to keep the data accessible within SDI’s. • For (inter) national exchange the use of a standard is a must. • A problem with describing meta-data is that the personal requirements are less than the organisational requirements.

  29. Assignment of the week • Please prepare a presentation about your SDI case from a technological point of view. • Concentrate on the use meta-data and the role of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) in your SDI case. • Is SOA implemented and how? • Provide an example of the functioning of your SDI (In the case of oral presentation through a life demonstration).
