What is Malware? • Malware is short for malicious software • Types of malware are: • viruses • worms • Trojans • bots • back doors • spyware • adware
What is Malware? • Malware cannot damage the physical hardware of systems and network equipment, but it can damage the data and software residing on the equipment
What is Virus ? • A program that copies itself and infects a PC • Spreadingfrom one file to another, and then from one PC to another when the files are copied or shared. • Can damage/alter your files/data. A virus might corrupt or delete data on your computer
Types of Viruses • Parasitic virus • Search and infect executable file • Memory-resident virus • infect running programs • Boot sector Virus • Spreads whenever the system is booted • Cleaning this type of virus is very difficult
What is Worm? • Malicious programs that make copies of themselves again and again on the local drive and network shares • Purpose of the worm is to reproduce itself again and again • Doesn’t harm any data/file on the computer.
What is Worm? • Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program. • Worms spread by exploiting vulnerabilities in operating systems • Effect worm to pc: • makes the pc too slow
What is Spam? • Spam is any unsolicited communication received electronically. • can also be used to describe any "unwanted" email from a company or website • Typically, we think of email, but instant messaging can also be a source of spam. • Spam can be an entry point for spyware or malware.
10 Prevention Tips • Only open email or instant messaging (IM) attachments from trusted sources . • Never click on a link within email text unless you are absolutely certain you recognize the URL • Install email filters so spam never enters your inbox • Never respond to request to "verify your account information". • Reject instant messages from anyone not on your buddy list
10 Prevention Tips 6. For suspicious error dialogs, it can be helpful to research by opening a new browser window and use a cut/paste to google a snippet of the error dialog text. 7. Install security software that will scan all incoming files before copying them to your disk drives 8. Stay current on all Microsoft critical updates (install auto-update option so this happens automatically)
10 Prevention Tips • Don't respond to email spam "opt-out" options. It's just an opportunity for them to identify you as a legitimate email address and send you lots more spam! • Make sure you back up your computer – and do it often!
