Col 1:16-17 “… all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” Rev 4:11 “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Thel’ēma: special purposes
Among the “all things” which God created on purpose and for specific purposes; Marriage holds a sacred place in His heart! Mt 19:5-7 “For this cause shall a man… cling to his wife, they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
If we want to restore a taste of “Eden” (עָדַן{ādan’} delightful, to live voluptuously) we must understand God’s purposes for marriage.
Israel “experimented” with their relationships, With devastating consequences. . Mal. 2:11-16 “Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD, and hath married the daughter of a strange god… Yet ye say, Wherefore? (Who, What, Why, How?) Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously:
why one?” Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?..
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” Partnership. Gen 2:18 “It is not good that the man should be alone…” Mal. 2:14 “She is thy companion (Ḥābēr: knit together) and the wife of thy covenant” Mt 19:6-7 “they are no more twain, but one…” (see 1 Cor 7:3,4)
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” 2. Protection.Gen. 2:18 “I will make him an help meet (ʿē’zer) for him.” from ʿāzar’: to surround and protect! From the world, flesh and devil. 1 Jn. 2:15-17; 5:19; Pr. 5; 1 Cor. 7:5 “Defraud ye not one the other… Lest Satan tempt you!”
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” 3. Procreation.Gen 1:27-28 “God created man … and said, Be fruitful and multiply…” Ps. 127:3 “Children are an heritage of the Lord.”
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” 3. Procreation.Mal 2:15 “did not he make one? wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed …, and let none deal treacherously”
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” 4. Pleasure.Gen 2:8 “God planted …Eden; (ʿêden: delight, pleasant, voluptuous pleasure) and there he put the man…” Gen 18:12 “Sarah laughed, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure?” (Eden!)
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” 4. Pleasure. Pr 5:18-19 “rejoice with thy wife... Let her be as the loving (affectionate) hind and pleasant (gracious, pleasant, precious) roe; let her breasts satisfy (satiate) thee at all times; and be thou ravished (enraptured) always with her love.”
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” 4. Pleasure.Song of Solomon 4:12, 16; 5:1 “A garden (Eden) inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed…” On their wedding night: “Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits. I am come into my garden, my spouse: I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine” God says: “eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved!” 5:1
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” 4. Pleasure.1 Cor 7:4, 33-34 “The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife…. he that is married careth how he may please his wife. she that is married careth … how she may please her husband. (merimna’ō: takes thought) (Ares’kō: excite emotion)
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” God brings two imperfect people together to try to: 5. Perfect (mature) them!Ps 138:7-8 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: (ḥāyâ’: recover, repair) The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: (gāmar’: perform or bring to completion)
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” 5. Perfect them! A. “Intimacy” (from Latin intimus) literally means: “Innermost” 1) Intimacy (In-To-Me-See) requires Transparency. 2) Transparency requires Vulnerability! 3) Vulnerability requires Trust!
Gen 2:25 “they were both naked, (exposed, vulnerable) the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” B. Why is vulnerability/transparency/Intimacy hard? • 1) It allows someone else • to get close enough to • really “see” us. • This allows them to help us! • “consider one another” Heb 10:24 • “Edify one another” Rom 14:19 • 1 Jn 4:18 “perfect (mature) lovecasts out fear”
5. Perfect them! C. This is part of God’s design for marriage. Eph. 5:17-32 17 “be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18 …be filled with the Spirit; (plero’o: replete, furnished, influenced) 21 Submitting yourselves one to another …” 22Wives submit yourselves unto your husbands as unto the Lord” 25 Husbands love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it;
5. Perfect them!Eph. 5:25-28 “Christ gave himself… Marriage (commitment) doesn’t ignore blemishes, But addresses them so that they can be cleansed! 26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. (am’omos: blame or fault)
5. Perfect them!Eph. 5:25-29 “Christ gave himself… 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth(ektreph’ō: bring to maturity, train) and cherisheth it, (thal’po: to foster Health & Growth) even as the Lord the church…”
Mal. 2:15 “Did not He make one?.. why one?” Partner, Protect, Procreate, Pleasure, Perfect… 6. To Be a Picture (Of His love to us!) Eph. 5:30-32 “nourisheth and cherisheth… as the Lord the church. For we are members of his body… For this cause shall a man leave his father & mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”
Rev 19:7,8 “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.”
God designed marriage for Partnership, Protection, Procreation, Pleasure, Perfecting, and as beautiful Picture (Example). Gen. 3:23,24 Satan, selfishness and sin marred this design. (Jn 10:10a) Jesus came to restore it! (2 Peter 1:3-4)
Jesus’ first Nazareth message quoted from Isaiah 61:1-3 “to bind up the broken hearted….give them beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, praise for heaviness… 4 And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. 6 But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God:” Luke 4:18-21
Christ is the Designer (author) of life and love. (James 1:17) Will you allow him to become the Developer (architect) of yours? 1 Cor. 3:9 Mt 11:28,29 Jn 10:10b; 27,28
