Foldables Magnetic Forces and Fields Make the following Foldable to help you see how magnetic forces and magnetic fields are similar and different.
Foldables Draw a mark at the midpoint of a vertical sheet of paper along the side edge.
Foldables Turn the paper horizontally and fold the outside edges in to touch at the midpoint mark.
Foldables Label the flaps Magnetic Force and Magnetic Field.
Foldables Compare and Contrast As you read the chapter, write information about each topic on the inside of the appropriate flap. After you read the chapter, compare and contrast the terms magnetic force and magnetic field. Write your observations under the flaps.

Reviewing Main Ideas 1 What is Magnetism? • All magnets have two poles—north and south. Like poles repel each other and unlike poles attract. • A magnet is surrounded by a magnetic field that exerts forces on other magnets.
Reviewing Main Ideas 1 What is Magnetism? • Atoms in magnetic materials are magnets. These materials contain magnetic domains which are groups of atoms whose magnetic poles are aligned. • Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field similar to the field around a bar magnet.
Reviewing Main Ideas 2 Electricity and Magnetism • Electric current creates a magnetic field. Electromagnets are made from a coil of wire that carries a current, wrapped around an iron core. • A magnetic field exerts a force on a moving charge or a current-carrying wire.
Reviewing Main Ideas 2 Electricity and Magnetism • Motors transform electric energy into kinetic energy. Generators transform kinetic energy into electric energy. • Transformers are used to increase and decrease voltage in AC circuits.
Chapter Review Question 1 Which of the following will increase the strength of an electromagnet? A. Increase the number of coils. B. Decrease the number of coils. C. Remove the iron core. D. Decrease the current in the coils. PS 4.4
Chapter Review Answer The answer is A. You can see this yourself by wrapping a current-carrying wire around a steel nail.
Chapter Review Question 2 Whether a transformer increases or decreases the input voltage depends on _______. Answer The ratio of the number of coils on the input side and the output side determines whether the transformer increases or decreases the voltage. PS 4.4
Chapter Review Question 3 Which class of lever is shown in this diagram? A. electromagnet B. generator C. superconductor D. transformer PS 4.4d
Chapter Review Answer The answer is A. An electric doorbell uses an electromagnet. Each time the electromagnet is turned on, the doorbell rings.
Chapter Review Question 4 What device would you use to measure the current in a circuit? A. motor B. ammeter C. galvanometer D. generator PS 4.4
Chapter Review Answer The answer is B. Connect the ammeter in series to the circuit, allowing all the current in the circuit to flow through it.
Chapter Review Question 5 A group of atoms in which all magnetic fields are pointing in the same direction is known as what? PS 4.4g
Chapter Review Answer It is known as a magnetic domain. By causing the magnetic domains in a piece of iron to become oriented, the iron can be magnetized.
Standardized Test Practice Question 1 To reduce the amount of electric energy converted into heat in power lines, the electric energy is transmitted at a high _____. A. voltage B. current C. resistance D. frequency PS 4.4d
Standardized Test Practice Answer The answer is A. Transformers are used to reduce the voltage so that the energy can be used more safely by households.
Standardized Test Practice Question 2 A device that changes the voltage of an alternating current is a _______. A. galvanometer B. generator C. transformer D. voltmeter PS 4.4
