Out of all the dental surgeries, wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common one. Wisdom teeth are large, come out late and that too at the back corners of the mouth.
They can either come through partially or break through the gums at an angle. So, in case they can’t make enough space to grow into an ideal position, a person can suffer from pain, infection and other dental issues.
In such situations, to avoid further complications and distress, dentists generally recommend wisdom teeth removal. Recovery from wisdom teeth removal is gradual. There has to be daily improvement.
Normally when the patient is from the age group of 15 – 25 years or the third molar roots are 2/3 developed, the recovery timeline is faster. At times, the surgery might cause swelling and bruises, delaying the healing time.
Furthermore not all wisdom teeth surgeries require stitches. But when stitches are unavoidable, the dentists will remove them one week after the surgery.
To be precise, the stages of wisdom teeth healing can be divided into four major stages –
1. The First 24 Hours: As soon as a wisdom tooth is extracted, whether in pieces or intact, the patient will bleed. To put a pause to this, the dentist will advise biting down a piece of gauze, so that pressure is built on that area and clotting takes place soon.
Additionally, a cold compress is needed on the cheek, near the surgery site. The later step needs to be repeated to keep swelling and pain at bay.
One should also take care to rinse the mouth with warm salted water, take rest and not to eat anything that is hot, crunchy, sugary and fatty.
2. Week 1 – 2: By now opening the mouth won’t be painful and normal eating can be resumed. The blood clotting will be colonized and replaced by granulation tissue – rich in collagen.
The amount of healing that will happen until now will depend on the size of the wound. Wider and deeper wisdom teeth removal cut will usually take a bit more time.
As the surgery site will be still tender and bleeding can take place if accidently poked, care should be taken not to engage in activities that can disturb the wound.
Week 3 – 4: Even though there will be a small indentation in the jawbone, by one month maximum of the patients are out of danger.
During this phase, mesenchymal cells are formed within the area’s granulation tissue, which will soon change into bone cells followed by bone tissue formation along the bony walls of the socket.
4. Bone Healing: Being the last healing stage of wisdom teeth removal, now the socket will start filling up and the hole will become smooth. As a result, neither it will bleed nor food particles will be trapped.
