Gum disease is a common problem in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly half of all adults over age 30 have some form of gum disease or periodontal disease. By age 65, that percentage increases to almost three-quarters. Since many symptoms of periodontal disease go unnoticed and untreated, it may already be in the advanced stages by the time Dr. Moshena Ahmad diagnoses you. At that point, you may wonder “Can gum disease be cured?” The answer to that question is yes.
Symptoms of Gum Disease and How It Develops When bacteria builds up on the teeth over time, it eventually causes inflammation and periodontal disease. You may brush your teeth twice daily and still not get your gums and every tooth perfectly clean. That’s why periodontal disease is so common. Some indications that you may have a bacterial infection in the gums include: • Bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth • Red or swollen gums
Your gum line is receding • Some of your teeth feel loose • Unhealed sores in your mouth • Constant bad breath in spite of using mouthwash every time you brush your teeth You’re also more likely to develop periodontal disease if you’re pregnant, smoke tobacco products, clench your teeth, or are under a lot of stress.
Treatment for Gum Disease Gum disease treatment with Dr. Ahmad typically involves deep cleaning and scaling of the teeth. This removes the plaque that has accumulated on your teeth and hardened. During this procedure, Dr. Ahmad concentrates on thoroughly cleaning between the pockets of the teeth where people tend to have the most infections. She will also perform an examination to make sure that another problem isn’t causing your gum disease, such as bones loss or loose fillings.
You will need to make a separate appointment for treatment if she discovers a separate dental issue. You can treat gum disease at home by brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice per day, flossing between each tooth, and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash. It’s also essential to keep up with your bi-annual preventive dental appointments.
