  2. TELEPHONING • Conversation : Operator : Good afternoon. Pacific Computer System. May I help you? Caller : Hello. Is it possible to speak to Mr. Bradley, extension 321, please? Operator : Just a moment, please. I will connect you. (pause, clicks) I’m trying to connect you. (Engaged tone) I’m sorry, the number is engaged. Would you like to hold? Caller : No, it’s all right. I’ll call back.

  3. USEFUL EXPRESSIONS : • Answering a call - Good morning/afternoon/evening, ABC Company. Can I help you? - Hello. Production Department. Clara’s speaking. May I help you? • Making a call - Could I speak to Mr/Ms ..........? - Is it possible to speak to Mr/Ms ..............? • Possible situations - Who’s calling? - I’m sorry, Mr/Ms .......... is out. May I know who’s speaking? • Transferring a call - Just a moment, please. I’ll put you through. - Hold on please. I’ll connect you immediately. • If you didn’t hear, you can say - I’m sorry. I didn’t catch what you said. - Could speak up, please? - Could you repeat what you said, please?

  4. Making an appointment • Conversation : Susan : Will you able to see me tomorrow? Mr.Brown : What time is it? Susan : At two o’clock. Mr.Brown : No, I’m afraid I can’t. Susan : How about three o’clock? Mr.Brown : Yes, that’s fine. Susan : Ok. I’ll see you then.

  5. Useful Expressions : • Making an appointment - I’d like to fix an appointment with Mr. X. Would ten tomorrow will be allright? - Do you think Mr. X could see me tomorrow before ten? • Possible Situations - Yes, he’s free then. I’ll make a note of it. - He won’t be in till 12, so the earliest would be 12.30 • Suggesting another time when the time doesn’t fix - How about 12.30? - Would 12.30 be convenient? - Could you make it at 12.30?

  6. EXERCISES : • Match this instruction to use a public telephone in the right order by putting the letters in the box provided in the picture. A. Dial the number and listen to the ringing to Speak when connected. B. Lift the receiver. Listen for dial tone. C. Put back the receiver and take the unused coin. D. Insert a coin. The minimum coin is usually displayed near the slot. • Work in pairs and write a dialogue on the phone. Choose one of the options below. • A company and a person. • Personal dialogue • A person and an operator • Between two companies.

  7. C. Mr. Black is a general manager of a supplier company. You are a representative of a retailer who would like to talk to him about Mr. Black’s new product. You are also a busy person. Write a dialogue between Mr. Black’s secretary and yourself. Use Mr. Black’s agenda as the referrence. Mr. Black’s Agenda Monday Mr. Smith 7 am - 12 am Tuesday John 9 am - 11 am ; Tim 12 am - 14 am Wednesday Mrs. Ann 10 am – 13 am Thursday Free till 10 am ; meeting at 10.30 am Friday Dr. Fritz 9 am – 11 am

GENRE TEXTS • Narrative to entertain the reader with the story that deals with complications or problematic events which lead to a crisis and in turn finds a resolution. • Descriptive to describe a particular person/thing/place. • Procedure to help us do a task or make something. They can be a set of instructions or directions. • Exposition to persuade by presenting arguments or to analyse or explain ‘HOW’ and ‘WHY’ • Explanation text to explain a process or procedure or to give directions or sometimes used to define something.

  9. HOMEWORK Find an example of each genre texts ( narrative, decriptive, procedure, explanation and exposition ), write it in Folio Paper and submit it next week.
