Rule #1: Use Commas to Separate Items in a Series (or a List) • Turn to page 315 • Read 14f until you get to “EXERCISE #2” STOP READING ON PG 317 AT “Exercise 32”
Rule #1: Use Commas to Separate Items in a Series (or a List) Use these anytime you have a list of ANYTHING! • A list can be single words Example: I love the beach, plays, and reading. • A list can be phrases (meaning not complete sentences) Example: I enjoy running at the beach, going to plays, and reading on rainy days. • A list can be many clauses (meaning complete sentences) Example: The lights dimmed, the curtain rose, and the orchestra began to play.
PRACTICE Complete Exercise #2 Questions #1-6 You must write out the ENTIRE SENTENCE and HIGHLIGHT the placement of the comma Example: 1. The basketball game was fun, lively, and engaging.

RULE #2: Use Commas to Sperate Two or More Adjectives before a Noun • Read page 318: 14g • Stop reading at Exercise 3
Place a comma between two adjectives describing a noun Example: The cute, small dog ran frantically Example: The clever, enthusiastic dog trainer called the dog to attention. NEVER place a comma before the noun itself The cute, small, dog ran frantically.
PRACTICE Complete #1-6 on page 318 under “Exercise #3” You must RE-WRITEthe entire sentence and HIGHLIGHTthe comma placement Example: 1. The bright, big sun came up behind the mountain.

ANSWER KEY 1. Human beings must study to become architects, yet some animals build amazing structures by instinct. 2. Interrupters • Place a comma anytime you have information in the sentence that is not needed to understand the whole meaning: -if information is just extra -if information just clarifies something Example: The best basketball team, which is the San Antonio Spurs, is currently in a slump. Example: My friend, Kourtney, believes Miley Cyrus is behaving appropriately. Example: Josh overcame his acrophobia, which is the fear of high places.
Answer Key • Estefan, badly injured in a bus accident in 1990, made a remarkable comeback the following year. • The accident, which occurred on March 20, 1990, shattered one of her vertebrae and almost severed her spinal cord. • The months of physical therapy required after the accident were painful for the singer.
