Introduction to the Away day dedicated to CLIC parameters The CLIC context and long term plan Work plan till 2010 The objectives of the day CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
Tentative long-term CLIC scenarioShortest, success oriented and technically limited schedule Technology evaluation and Physics assessment based on LHC results for a possible decision on Linear Collider funding with staged construction starting with the lowest energy required by Physics CDR TDR First Beam CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
Medium term plan: 2006-2010 • Demonstration of CLIC technology in CTF3 • Construction and commissioning with beam of CTF3 • Construction and tests with power&beam of structures • Full time operation (10 months/year) of CTF3 • Design optimisation of CLIC scheme • Optimum parameters based on present knowledge and test results • Realistic progress in the next three years (following 20 years of hard work) • Close collaboration with Physics for optimum match • Optimum balance between Performance driven and cost driven design • Validity of tests in CTF3? • Conceptual Design Report in 2010 • Description of CLIC scheme and concepts of all sub-systems • Results of tests and technology demonstration in CTF3 • Cost evaluation following iteration(s) on performance and design • Did we plan all work still to be done for 2010 technology evaluation (comparison ILC)? • Preparation of the phase after 2010 • R3&R4 key issues (industrialisation) • What next after CTF3? • R&D on Stand alone power sources for structures conditionning and testing CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
CLIC plan and resources(2006-2010) • Report summarizing necessary work and (M&P) resources: review with DG end April • Corresponding to all previous work • Continuous CTF3 operation, intensive structure developments&tests • Taking into account known collaborations • FP7 program: requests 2007; resources: 2008-2013 • Possible CERN resources following LHC completion? • Committed to the DG and the HEP community • Importance of schedule and RdV in 2010 • Focus effort on 2010 objectives not on long term R&D • CLIC = CERN (and HEP) future preferred scenario for CERN • Great expectation in the community CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
First Away-day dedicated to,The CLIC 30 GHz Structure Testing ProgramDate: 15.2.2006 • Get an overview of the necessary tests • CTF3 power source operation scenarios, expected performances and upgrade paths • Identify required and missing resources to demonstrate the feasibility of CLIC structures before 2010 CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
Summary of away-day 15.2.2006 dedicated toThe CLIC 30 GHz Structure Testing Program (H.Braun and W.Wuensch) Accelerating Structures: • construction and tests in 2006: 5 structures @ 30 GHz for tests in CTF3 and 2 structures @ 11.4GHz in NLCTA • Future constructon and test still to be finalised PETS • Plan for high power prototype by end 2007 for CLEX operation Linac Power source • Plan for improvements from 60 to 100 MWatts/10Hz CTF3 full time operation • 200 days/year with assistance from CCC during nights and week ends • Automated test stand for RF conditionning Evaluation of (missing) resources CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
Overall baseline parameters CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
2nd Revised AgendaAway-day dedicated to CLIC parameters • Converge to a parameter correspondin to the best trade-off between CLIC schedule, structure limitations, beam-dynamics limitations, testing capabilities and overall costs. • Provide input for CTF3 program CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
Goal of the day • Brainstorming and exchange of information& ideas • Presentations meant as subject introduction • Half of the time dedicated to discussion • Tentative optimum parameter list(s) • Baseline = 30 GHz, 150 MV/m • Optimum frequency? Optimum gradient? • Others? • Invited presentation at EPAC06 (A.Grudiev) • Feasibility of the various sub-systems? • Cost issues • Can they be demonstrated before 2010? • Input for short and long(er) term tests in CTF3 • Preparation of reflection on resources CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
The CLIC parameters revisited(tentative and provocative!)J.P.Delahaye 09/09/00 Introduction After 15 years of R&D on the CLIC scheme and about 5 years before a conceptual design is issued (consistent with possible decisions in 2008), it is the right moment to critically review the CLIC parameters in order to: • better adapt them to the Physics needs, • make them as realistic as possible for a construction in a reasonable amount of time, taking into account what has been learned during the past 15 years of R&D and in the two stages of Test Facilities (CTF1 and CTF2), • better define the parameters of the new series of prototypes which will have to be started soon as they could significantly influence their design. The present paper is meant to be provocative in order to launch the discussion within the CLIC accelerator design team as well as with the CLIC Physics study group in order to choose parameters which does not make the design unnecessarily difficult and/or with unrealistic challenges. Suggestions and question marks • Colliding beam energy: 2 TeV ? • Luminosity : 1034 cm-2s-1 ? • Accelerating Gradient: 120 MV/m ? • Frequency of the accelerating structures: 30 or 24 GHZ? CLIC Away Day 27/03/06
