Why are we here? • Stella has agreed to try (beta test) SMARTe* • to locate resources/info to reuse Cardwell site. • But tools for ‘sustainable’ development are untried. • Stella has agreed to help us apply and develop sustainability tools, and benefit from our learning. * (Sustainable Management Approaches and Revitalization Tools – electronic) 6

What’s in it for Stella? • A Vision – an image of what could be • A Plan – A product of integrating your values with science to be relevant to each other. • Basis for efficient roads, waterlines, schools • Participate in a new future • Opportunity to create a viable community for you and future generations 6

What’s in it for EPA? • Understanding what is involved in sustaining the environment, society, and economy. • A predictable way to ‘protect’ environment and human health, and saving $billions and decades lost if we don’t ‘protect’. • A strategy and tools for breathing new life into thousands of communities like yours. 6

Question: How should development create “livable, inspiring, enduring, and equitable places…where the quality of life and the long-term quality of human existence will be enhanced rather than depleted?” (Timothy Beatley and Kristy Manning, The Ecolocy of Place (Washington, D.C.: Island Press, p. 2) • Only you can answer • Your plan • SMARTe and EPA may help find answers but – • Decisions will be yours. • Implementation will be by you. • Alterations will be by you. • Planner’s responsibility –to empower you 6
