  3. Causes Privileged bourgeoisie (middle class) resented by others in third estate. Peasants were heavily taxed, as nation went into further debt. (historically, the rich are not taxed: old idea)

  8. Reaction • By 1788, France was on the verge of bankruptcy • Bread riots in cities • Nobles fear the king will raise taxes. • 1789-Estates General meeting is held in Versailles. • The reps of all three estates are deadlocked and do not agree.

Persuade King Louis to improve your living conditions. 1st Estate AND 2nd Estate Write a letter to the National Assembly (the 3rd Estate). Introduce yourself with a made up name and occupation. Write about what you will do to fix the broken economy. Persuade the 3rd Estate NOT to revolt against King Louis’ government.
