VISION AND MISSION: • An organization’s mission is its current purpose and scope of operation, while its vision is a forward – looking statement of what it wants to be in the future.
SWOT analysis: • A SWOT analysis is a tool strategists use to evaluate Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats
Strength: • Strengths are project resources and capabilities that can lead to a competitive advantage. • .
Strength: (cont’) • For instance, answers should be found for these classical questions: • Which are our own advantages? • What are we able to do quite well? • What strategic resources can we rely upon?
Strength: (cont’) • Examples : • Has a 24-hour Business Centre • All the rooms over look the beach • Provides disability facilities • Unique location
Weaknesses: • Weaknesses are resources and capabilities that a company does not possess, to the extent that their absence places the firm at a competitive disadvantage. • In order to identify weak areas these questions may be useful: • What could we enhance? • What should we avoid to do? • What are we doing poorly?
Weaknesses: (cont’) Examples : • The construction of the project needs huge funds • Expensive resort operations (lift services, grooming, trail maintenance) • No special transportation shuttle (to the airport)
Opportunities: • Opportunities are conditions in the broad and operating environments that allow a firm to take advantage of organizational strengths, overcome organizational weaknesses, and/or neutralize environmental threats. • In order to single out opportunities, you may ask: • Where are future opportunities positioned? • Which are the most interesting trends that we know?
Opportunities: (cont’) • Examples: • Demand between the national and the inbound tourists can be easily managed due to difference in the period of holidays. For international tourists the peak season for arrival is between September to March when the climatic conditions are suitable where as the national tourist waits for school holidays, generally the summer months. • Using of lack of other tourism channels.
Threats: • Threats are conditions in the broad and operating environments that may impede organizational competitiveness or the achievement of stakeholder satisfaction • Or: areas of the external environment that may affect negatively on the performances of the firm. • In order to identify possible and existing threats: • What obstacles must we face?
Threats: (cont’) Examples: • Lack of community acceptance of the idea of the resort . • New competitors • Possibility of influences of high waves specially in winter • The economic conditions of a country have a direct impact on the earnings in hotel industry. • Reliance on government permits and strict adherence to environmental laws and regulations.
