The League of Nations LON FOR SHORT.
WEE RECAP ON VERSAILLES • David Lloyd George was from? • Britain • Georges Clemenceau was from? • France • Woodrow Wilson was a? • Yank, and a racist (gossip) • The French wanted a harsh treatment of Germany so they wouldn’t be threatened by any potential attacks. Britain wanted Germany punished but did not have the same malice as the French. U.S.A also wanted Germany to be punished but primarily wanted to stay out of European affairs
Woodrow Wilson • Wilson had been working on a document to show the war was being fought for a moral cause and that European peace was at the crux of it. • Most of the points were to do with territorial changes and trade. The final point called for the setting up of a world parliament where nations would meet together to settle arguments instead of going to war. • Friends
LON – so what's it all about? • If a member country was attacked, the rest of the League would treat the matter as an attack on themselves and go to the aid of their fellow members. This was called COLLECTIVE SECURITY • Member countries promised to seek to solve their problems by talking rather than fighting • If talks between nations broke down, they were to go before the League to settle their differences. • If fighting broke out the members would be asked to punish the guilty party by cutting off all trade • If all else failed, the League could impose its will by force.
So the LON kind of looked after the world like Batman did Gotham city… kinda
Sweet success • In the 1920’s the league was successful in solving a number of disputes • - 1925 Greece invaded Bulgaria, league ordered the Greeks to withdraw. Bulgarians were told not to interfere in the withdrawal, they didn’t, peace was restored. • The true test for the League was to come in the 1930’s when disputes arose involving the big powers.
Weaknesses of the League • Three of the greatest worldly powers were not members. U.S.A was never convinced of the benefits of joining despite it begin their brain-child. Germany wasn’t allowed to join because it was a defeated nation. Russia was in the midst of a civil war, and a long with the links and threat of communism were not invited to join. • The League had no power to enforce its decisions. It had no police or army and relied on members to supply troops when needed. • The League could only use force in a dispute if all the members agreed.
But What does this mean? • Well.. The league is nothing like Batman
So it must mean… • Write down a possible consequence for the failures of the LON. Use evidence to back up your point
