Science College Letter Assignment • 50 – 70 minutes • Writing – Inquiry – Collaboration – Reading • What science is required for colleges? • What classes are needed to get into college? • The assignment focuses on researching and identifying how much and what kinds of sciences are required at different schools.
College Letter Assignment • List 5 colleges or universities that you might want to attend. For example: • NC State University • NC A&T State University • UNC Chapel Hill • East Carolina Univeristy • NC Central University

Why So Much Writing • Writing promotes clear thinking • Writing promotes effective and long-term learning. • Writing provides individuals and groups in a complex world with a voice and a record. • Writing is the single most powerful tool for thinking, learning and participating in society. • Writing qualifies students for college entry, college success, and post academic career.
The Writing Process • Terror for many students • The risk of putting words on paper, exposing the logic of thought and argument, wresting with style that is true to both the writer and audience, and then making it public is often overwhelming to most students. • AVID WICR can help students overcome self-doubt and resistance
Rubrics • Almost all of the writing units include holistic scoring guidelines that can be used by students to shape their writing and to evaluate their own work and work of other students.
