  2. What is Autism? Autism is a group of brain disorders in which social skills, behavior, and communication are impacted. (Note: Autism can range in a variety of levels, usually anywhere from a mild case to A severe case).

  3. First signs/symptoms of autism • Hand Flapping • Head Banging • Needing the same routine • Temper Tantrums • Using other peoples’ words just to express communication (also meaning difficulty with socially expressing oneself).

  4. First Signs/Symptoms of Autism (continued) • Overstimulation to Environment: (These can include bright lights, loud noise, and routines that change/ transfer). *Inappropriate Social Interaction (ex. Child may talk to adults well, but will have difficulty talking to kids (due to maturity level and so forth).

  5. The Diagnosis • Children who are babies to age 2 or 3 would usually show loss of communication (ex. May learn words, and use them earlier, but then lose them quickly). Children who show no social communication, unusual behaviors, etc. are then referred to a psychologist and/or neurologist for testing if the child does meet the diagnosis of autism. (Diagnosis will vary based on child’s strengths and weaknesses socially and behaviorally).

  6. Levels of Autism

  7. Autism Statistics and Events • According to the Government and their studies, 1 in 100 as of this time currently have autism spectrum disorders in the United States. • Autism Awareness Month is in April, and April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day.
