  2. 1472 B.C. • Queen Hatshepsut • First woman to rule as pharaoh • Wore a false beard • Large trading expedition to Punt • Brought back rare herbs, spices, scented woods, live monkeys, and potted trees for making incense • Had many obelisks made • Ruled for 15 years and then disappeared • May have died peacefully or may have been killed by her stepson Thutmose III • After her death, Thumose became pharaoh and tried to destroy all records of Hatshepsut’s reign.

  3. 1353 B.C. • Akhenaton • Lifted a sun god called Aton to the highest status • Closed the temples of other gods- promotion of one god • Made priests very angry so he moved 200 miles away to a new capital city called Akhetaton • Egyptian artwork changed • Realistic vs. perfect beauty • Wife was Nefertiti

  4. 1333 B.C. • Tutankhamen • Relative of Akhenaton • 9 years old when he took over as pharaoh • Relied on advisers to help him rule Egypt • Died when he was about 18 years old • Tomb was discovered in 1922 • King Tut Video

  5. 1279 B.C. • Ramses II • Ruled for 66 years (one of the longest in history) • Wanted to make Egypt powerful through war • Led an army into battle against the Hittites • Treaty he negotiated with the Hittites was the first known peace treaty in world history • Built a city called the House of Ramses • Was pharaoh until 1213 B.C., when he was more than 90 years old! • After treaty with Hittites, no enemy threatened Egypt while Ramses ruled

What happened next? • Egypt was never quite the same after Ramses died. • After 1070 B.C. a series of foreign powers ruled Egypt. • Alexander the Great, king of Macedonia conquered Egypt • After his death, Macedonians continued to rule Egypt • The last Macedonian ruler- famous Queen Cleopatra • Eventually the Roman Empire conquers Egypt.
