MILOS520 VOS AWS Selwyn Alpert Vaisala, Inc. Woburn, MA
OVERVIEW • WMO Objective: • Increase observations over the oceans • Utilize buoys, floats, and ships • VOS - Voluntary Observing Ships • Synoptic data (real-time communication) for improved forecasting • VOSClim - Voluntary observing ship data for improved climatalogical data base (no need for real time) • MILOS520 VOS AWS - New Vaisala AWS configuration for VOS applications
MILOS AWS • AWS based on Milos Series of AWS - • over 2000 built from mid-70’s to • present (M200, M500, M520) • First Ship applications during 80’s • Total Installed base over 85 systems • Cruise Ships • Research Ships • Military Ships • Fishing ships • ASAP containers • VOS AWS
MILOS520 VOS AWS • Based on MILOS520 AWS - • Designed for harsh • environments • Temperature range • -50 ...+70 oC • Vibration resistant • up to 2G • Modular Hardware • Modular/Flexible Software
MILOS520 VOS AWS • Designed • for VOS and VOSClim Use - • True Wind • FM13 reporting • IMMT-2 data storing • Easy install/remove
MILOS520 VOS AWS • Easy Installation • Four meter mast as default • Tiltable • No guy wires needed • Non Corrosive material • Sea aluminum • Anodized and painted • Only fixing bolts needed
MILOS520 VOS AWS • Easy Installation • Cable connectors for all • standard sensors • Wind • Temperature / Humidity • Water temperature • Serial lines • Gyro compass • GPS / Inmarsat • PC - Terminal

MILOS520 VOS AWS • HighData Quality • High quality sensors • Measurement validation • Min / Max check • Step limit check • Calculation validation • 80 % of data requirement • Validation for manual inputs
MILOS520 VOS AWS • Communication • Inmarsat C as default • Goes, GTS and Meteosat • Argos / SCD • Others
Inmarsat C Communication • Inmarsat C data reporting mode: Australia VOS • In co-operation with the Australian Met Bureau • The message reported is a binary subset of the full ship message. • The data is sent via Inmarsat C using the data reporting mode, which reduces the running costs. The data is sent to the Bureau via the Perth Land Earth Station. • The data is decoded within the Bureau and is then placed on the GTS as a full Ship message. • BBXX VLST 24174 99383 31448 46/// /0124 10118 20094 30202 40233 52008 22224 85105 • BBXX VLST 24184 99381 31449 46/// /0123 10117 20088 30203 40234 52010 22284 85101
